    clutch going? defender

    Morning all,

Hoping someone might have some ideas about a small problem I have.

I have 2001 defender, and am finding the clutch getting shorter and shorter, while also finding the gears more and more sticky (particularlay first to second and reverse). All the fluid levels are ok, so not sure if the clutch might be on the way out.

    Any thoughts?

    cheers

Sounds like your master cylinder may be failing. I have the same thing on my car, albeit my car is a lot older than yours. I have changed the clutch, slave cylinder and Clutch dampner. Although the dampner made the biggest difference the problem is still noticeable. So the next thing I'm going to change is the master cylinder, I just took the longer road than most....

Hope this helps, maybe someone with the same model as yours can shed some light.

Bleed the clutch master & slave cylinders and see if that makes a difference. Benzini is probably right, but rule out the cheap options first. It could be air bubbles in the hydraulic fluid.

I replaced a clutch master cylider on a mates 200Tdi Defender last week. $36 for the master cylinder. It shouldn't be much different for the TD5 (same pedal, same cylinder I'm guessing). Don't get ripped off for parts.

I hope it's something cheap & easy to fix.

    Defender Clutch

How long since the fuilds were changed? May also pay to check the Brake Vacuum Pump for leaks.

    Dont replace the clutch master....

Get it resleeved by a brake specialist.

The OE ones are soft metal and will wear quickly again. Sleeving will give a much longer lasting cylinder.

This puzzles me - my 110 has only had two master cylinders in over 400,000km, and as far as I can tell the cylinders are very similar if not identical. I think I have fitted more slave cylinders.

As mentioned before... Check out the cheap things first:

1 - Change fluid & bleed the system.
2 - Change/test master & slave systems. 5 Yrs is when the seals on these things will start to give out.
3 - Drain the oil & see if there's any crud in it...

If those don't work, then it's either going to be the clutch release fork or the clutch. Either way, it's a 'box out task.

However... It does sound more as though it's a problem with the clutch releasing rather than the thing being worn out.

    Clutch Going, Defender Tdi

This makes interesting reading. My clutch is dodgy too. I posted something about it in another thread but didn't get much of a response.

Getting it outta reverse is a bitch. It almost feels like the box has a bit of hook in it. If you keep the shift right over to the right it comes out with no probs (no probs selecting reverse). If you simply try to push the shift straight up it just doesn't want to come out.

1st to 2nd shift cold is a not real flash either. It's going for some work tomorrow at the resident Landy expert so I'll mention it. All this with alledgedly only 35,000k too

    WTF is a dampner?

    Cheers,

Thanks for all the tips fellas. I replaced the master and slave to be sure and all is well, gears are smooth again and the clutch is your classic heavy defender push.

    cheers
