Will be interesting to see what has happened when the box is stripped down. I'm just hoping the casing is ok.
Assuming you’re not just having a lend - I’ll be interested to hear what the cause was.
My daughter bought an early Puma with a busted transfer a few months back. The rear bearing on the intermediate gear had completely disintegrated and the gear chewed into the back of the case until it found the end of a bolt from the rear cover.
At that point it shed some teeth which then went through the rest of the gearset.

Well I said there were plenty more teeth in an LT230. Here are some of them:

Somehow, this was still driving. This is the input gear:

All the other gears are also toast of course but the casing had thankfully not sustained any catastrophic damage.
I can't recall this letting go, it was whining like a bored teenager and making occasional strange grumbling sounds but no memorable 'bang' event.
I have just completed a rebuild with all new gears, including ATB, also installed a complete reco MT82 and LOF coupling shaft. The difference in noise level is, as you might expect, incredible. The vinyl floor matting was so bad as to not be worth putting back in but even with bare floors the noise level in the vehicle allows quiet conversation.
Any clues as to what the cause was - or likely just a case of a broken/chipped tooth that caused it to self destruct?

I have to confess i didn't really look hard for what had been the cause, just made sure to do everything right putting it back together. Hope it lasts well now. Probably needs a trip to Geelong to run it in.
