i think you would measure a sender using Ohms??
as it gets hotter the Ohms should increase or decrease??
ive got a tester for head gaskets also! more for piece of mind.

help car still running hot, virtually everything is new with in last couple of years, all pipes flushed and rad has just been cleaned, i had an impressive amount of mud on it.
now i suspect either gauge or temp sender, can some one jog my memory how to check temp sensor. im sure putting a voltage on it sends it one way, but can not remember. secondly i'm pretty certain engine is running normal temp as i can still hold water pipes and squeese them once its running warm, how do i check the water temperature, ie were do i get a temperature gauge to remotely read temperature.

a t-kay tester.....with the blue fluid....?
does that work on diesel engines as well.....
and yes.....you are looking for a resistance reading when testing the sender unit.....
whis is the ohms scale on your multimeters....
to check the actual temperature of things....a infra red thermometer is the best......
just check to see if your mechanic has one in the workshop.....it will tell exactly what temp things are.....
when you say overheating.......how hot are we talking about......?
Before you go off on a tangent... Here's some things to try.
1 - Borrow a thermometer from someone so you can double check the ACTUAL temperature of the engine. A laser one would be perfect & fire it at the thermostat housing when hot. (Just noticed that Zook has made exactly the same suggestion...)
2 - If the temp on the thermometer is showing it's all OK but the dash is showing hot... It may not be the sender but just a poor earth instead. Test it by getting a jumo lead, attach one end to the battery -ve and the other end to the engine (a starter motor bolt is quite handy). If the temp gauge goes back to normal, you'll know where the problem is.

Ian if all else fails i have a temp guage for reading ashfalt temp so it's pretty acurate.

the under bonnect temp seems fine, judged by my hand thermometer, i can hold the hot water pipes and they can be squeesed,
so not rock solid.
will try the ohm meter on the sender and barry may borrow the temp gauge if i have no luck thanks.
