    Alternator Where Does this Bit Go?

    Hello All,

    Does anyone know where this unattached bit -pictured in the red oval - should be fitted to? The alternator is for a 1993 Defender 110 with a 200TDI. There are no obvious markings for the manufacturer's brand however a photograph match finds it close to being a OEX Alternator For Land Rover Defender L316 2.5L Lucas Style 12v 65a Part No: LXA119.

    If you have one of these type of alternators fitted to your Defender 200tdi could you please let me know where the currently unattached part should go?

    I pulled the alternator apart more than a year ago because it was chocked full with oil and bull-dust from the steering pump leaking for years. Then a quick clean ran into a snag when the rectifier bolts were inaccessible due to the very narrow clearance around the bolts that was so narrow even the thinnest walled standard manufactured socket was too big. So days turned to weeks, to months to.....

    Lesson learnt - not only will I bag and label the parts - I will put a date on the label. I will also take photographs and take them off the phone that night and upload them to the computer and put make a file that is dated and labelled for easy retrieval. With the parts bag labelled and dated it will be a quick job to go onto the computer and find the photographs.

    I must learn that there is no such thing as the parts going back together the next day. Thinking to yourself, "there is no need to take photographs as I will remember how things go together tomorrow," is just inviting a whole world of pain. "Don't do it Lionel .... just don't...... "

    Time passes - "ouch" that turned around and bit me on the arse!

    it goes on the big + terminal.
    It is a capacitor to cut RF interference.

    Bloody hell Lionel, you do get yourself into strife, if it is not your thesis (?) it is summat else.


    Sorry no idea old mate. It looks like a Carbon block with a "mounting flange" with a terminal 'tuther end.



    I'd be looking for it to go somewhere, but no idea of it's purpose???? I guess some one here will know for sure, Trial & Error could bugger something up so I'd also be awaiting that advice. It may even be surplus to requirements now.
    After a year another couple of days ain't going to matter is it?

    I is just a victim of vicious circumstances I says ....

    Back then it was a case of attempting to do stuff in the odd bit of free time that came along at very infrequent intervals when I was writing the thesis. However, something would happen and the free time evaporated. This was frequently coupled with unanticipated things happening like a manufacturer designing a recess that was too small for a standard socket to fit their bolts, more time went then got chewed up doing things - like getting a forum member to modify a socket so I could undo the rectifier and later install a new rectifier. Plus Australia Post input before and after getting the interstate bit of socket modification being performed. It all coincided with the final push with the thesis - which took much longer than it should have - all adding together to make it a very long time before I had free time again.

    Now with the thesis in the box and with myself writing "Dr." at the front of my name I seem to have free time again. This evidentially involves me having to play catch-up for a while. Looking at a part from back in time and going - "hmm I wonder where you are meant to go?" Now add to this a bit about a deliberately choosing a three day a week job so I could have regular periods of free time. Well within a fortnight the job turned into a five day a week job . Now I have disposable income and couple with just a little bit of free time, which provides the opportunity where I can hopefully make up some lost ground. After that it should be full steam ahead and Snowy will be back on the road. Just have to put all the bloody parts back together again. Fingers crossed.

    Hello Philip,

    Thank you very - very much for identifying where the capacitor goes. Also for identifying what the part is and what it does. That is a hell of a lot more information than what I had previously.

    Hello All,

    One thing I am going to do tomorrow, or soon afterwards, is to take one of the three bolts that secure the rectifier on to alternator to the local bolt place. I am going to see if they have something like a machine screw, or even a simple slotted or Philips head to replace the bolts with. That way I will be able to use bog standard tools to reinstall the rectifier. Also, in the future to be able to use bog standard tools if I ever have to take it apart again. Well that is disassemble it - once I take some photographs, date the happy snaps and upload them into a specially labelled and dated folder on the computer under the name of "Snowy's Electrics".

    Try an Allen key head bolt. These often work well when there is limited clearance.

    Thanks Lionel, so glad to see you haven't lost your sense of humour despite all the trials & tribulations, whatever that means, & I am sure Snowy will be much appreciative of your efforts.     Hello All,

    Well while I was on the hunt for some other photographs I stored on my computer I found three happy snaps taken of the back of Snowy's alternator showing where all the wires were connected back in March 2021. Woot woot.

    Now to find the missing photos that I was originally hunting tonight.
