    JLR Supercharged AJV8 teardown video

This engine is used in a number of LR products so I'm putting this in Tech Chatter rather than, say, RR.

If you had one if these and it needed work, you'd also need a thick wallet!

It's an hour long video but it's interesting.

And the only thing wrong really was the timing chains had stretched and the tensioner was FUBAR.
This is really common on these as attested by many vloggers who buy one cheap at auction.
And the cost to fix is astronomical even though it is a Ford engine. Note the Fomoco on the tensioner.
I wouldn't buy a used anything with this engine, although if you had it from New and changed the oil regularly they should be OK.
The Ford 4L in the D3 also has this problem, as does the Commodore V6.
Oh for shorter oil change intervals.

According to Wiki its a LR designed engine but then Ford bought LR and built it,, who knows what they changed,
Ford stopped production in 2020 but LR build theirs in house.
    So many bores and strokes!

so many -not- parts. Friend of mine did his engine and you can't buy **** for it. Not a piston ring, no oversized bearings, nothing. Ford only asks you top or bottom of the engine and then you can go and sell a kidney.

Would not touch with a barge pole.

I had to watch the relevant section again. The length of the chain runs, what they have to drive... I've seen heavier chains on a Malvern Star. It's difficult to see why they wouldn't stretch in this application.

    as does the Commodore V6.
Me neither. As for the Commodore V6, I've done chains in those. The tensioners fail and they sound like a bucket of bolts in a concrete mixer. They're a PITA to do if they ain't your bread and butter... but at least you can get at 'em. Eventually.

It's no wonder I like 300TDis, Oh, and the old Perky in my OKA. And Barras. You can get more power out of a Barra than you'll ever get out of one of these, and it won't break. Getting it to fit is another issue.

Yes, the chains look so piddly!

I fear for my BMW M62, chains, too. No one seems to be interested in replacing them and the chain guides.

There are a few blokes on the US Jaguar forum who have rebuilt several of these engines after significant failures, typically from timing chain problems leading to piston contact. Appears not difficult to pick up a cheap Jaguar XFR with a busted engine over there. They have managed to source quality aftermarket pistons, conrods etc, but these aren't people who are living on welfare.

Samcrac on YT comes to mind. Not for the Jag engine so much, but the fixing up of broken exotica while not on welfare.
