    LT 230 and Helical forward control transfer boxes?

    Hi Guys

    Does anyone have any knowledge about both the LT 230 and the Series 2B/Series 2A 1 Ton helical transfer boxes?

    The internals look very similar in their respective manuals. Are there any interchangeable parts? Or at least would the Overdrives for the LT230 work in the SIIB?

    Or am I wasting my time even looking?

    I once compared the ends of a 77/LT230, LT95 and a Series III TC/box, as I had a series PTO winch and I wanted to know if it would fit the LT230. I later had a LT95 overdrive, and whilst the gearbox output shafts are somewhat similar, the arrangement for the bearings and the spacings for the accessories are sufficiently varied to make conversion extremely difficult.

    As to interchangeable parts - I'll let somebody else answer that one.

    I know it's going to be awkward, but It is good to investigate what's been done with what success.

    The Series IIB helical t/fer box is quite different to the series III transfer box and as I suggested appears somewhat more in common to the LT230 than it does to it's S1, SII and SIII cousins. The helical box includes the ability to change hi to low range and back on the move, something that is very difficult to do in a SIII.

    The helical box's big downfall is the 7.19:1 final drive in Hi range top on it's also orphan ENV 4.7:1 diffs.

    Will keep investigating.

    Is there anywhere on line one van view the internal workings of the Borg Warner viscous coupling transfer box?

    The Borg Warner t/case uses a drive chain (no gears).

    If the Borg Warner is gearless where do you get the hi - low range from?

    And what are the ratios etc?

    I don't know the ratios, but I think the Borg Warner has two sets of sprockets and two chains - just engage the appropriate one for high/low.

    That's what I thought, however talking to Ward at Graeme Cooper's he suggests that in the B.W. box there is a single chain and an epicyclic gearbox where the PTO/overdrive usually is in Series and some Rangie's and Defenders.

    Given that I have one of those boxes in my Classic I climbed underneath and the following (poor) pic is what I saw.
    Given that epi-cyclic boxes seem to be the way to go, I have contacted Rocky Mountain in Vancouver (Roverdrive) to see if they have an option for the 1 Ton/Forward Control.

    My other option is to see if my friendly local engineer would be interested in re-manufacturing my old Rangie's Fairey O/D to fit the Helical box. Not original but worth investigating.

    Doing the spread sheet work, using a Rocky Mountain Roverdrive, I would be just about the same final drive as a standard series vehicle on 7.50 16 tyres.
