    SDV8 Intake cleaning?

    Hi All,

I have my 4.4 SDV8 out of the car and want to do all the jobs that are easier now before it goes in, the main one is the Intake plenum and intake manifolds.

I have the intake plenum off the motor and stripped down to just the plastic - what is the best way to clean all the carbon out?

Similarly, how easy is it to take the inlet manifolds off and clean them out?

Any other items worth looking at while the motor is out?

    Cheers LRH

I scraped mine's air intake initially then used a high pressure washer to blast it clean. I have no desire to clean the inlet manifolds and I doubt that they would be nearly as clogged because they get a lot hotter.

Mine's EGR has been disabled to prevent the build-up, to stop exhaust gas heating the oil cooler hoping to allow the gaskets to survive and for better throttle response.

    Cheers Graeme,

there is a small amount of build up inside the intakes/rocker covers but if its easyish to take them off now then I might as well do them now.

I am going to blank off the EGR both on the PCM and physically - is the blanking plate the same as on the 3litre?

I haven't fitted a blanking plate yet. I made a plate a couple of years ago but it couldn't be left fitted without the mapping-out but I haven't been able to find it again. I doubt it's the same as the 3.0 as the 3.0 has 2 EGR valves so I would expect the 4.4's to be larger.

New manifold gaskets should be fitted if the manifolds are removed, along with new injector pipes if LR's instructions are followed. Without EGR the manifolds are likely to in time be cleaned but I haven't bothered to check mine.

Highly recommend if you are working on your intake then talk to your local engine reconditioning place as they may have one of those hot chemical cleaning baths, my local engine shop did mine and it came out spotless!!!

Goes for TDV6 as well, when i had my covers off for the top end rebuild after the oil pump let go i found the top intake ports where the butterflies are were at least 50% blocked. Multiple cans of degreaser , soaking in hot water and the gerni got them clean.

The real question is "did it make any difference at all?".

Hard to tell but if left much longer it would be a large reduction in airflow, the top ports are smaller so i reckon if they were totally blocked that would equate to about 30% less volume.

I did a Triton here last week, good mate of mine, used Supercheap Auto "supreme green" wheel cleaner to wash them out. Worked well.

I did injectors valve clearance and the wash. He noticed. The injectors were not that bad. Only the inlets were tight.. So the inlet wash helped. Wasn't over the top bad
