    The Engel thermal fuse

A friend has recently bought a new Engel fridge. The new D-max ute has been professionally wired with a power box in the tray to allow connection of the fridge. The ute also has a weatherproof shutter canopy to keep everything dry. The fridge has been used once and now the thermal fuse has blown. A trip to town to get it sorted is annoying on a new item.
I've had a read around the web and there's a suggestion that the special expensive fuse is only providing protection of the crappy ciggy type plug it's fitted into, and that a permanent wiring job, or a better more reliable plug (Anderson?)would be a better idea. What thinkest, experts?

    Depending on your power cable...

Unscrew the end of the cigarette plug and you will find a 2-pin plug that screws into an Engel socket - much more betterer. I've never had a problem with it in many years of use. It's held securely and doesn't fall out. I just use a bog standard fuse in mine.

My cable looks like this with the cigarette plug fitted:

    and with the end unscrewed:

The socket has a fuse holder in both the + and - feeds.

I use Merit plugs on everything, fridges, hand held spotlights for shooting, etc.
Never had an issue, but the Narva one is the best quality. They clip in well, and can't fall out or come loose.
Always had issues with cig lighters and the sockets.

Merit was the go to... It still has problems...

Best solution to date is to use Powerpoles (Anderson Plugs).

I've been running my Engel ( using a fuse) via Anderson plug for 6 years - no worries.

If you’re going to the trouble of Anderson plugs than I’d just hard wire it and forget about plugs/connections altogether.

If it happens to be a fridge that get removed you can unplug at the fridge.

Thanks all, I've recommended they disconnect the ciggy plug and get a Narva socket to plug the Engel two pin plug into.
