    Noisy Roof Rack

    Hi All,
I have just fitted a second hand roof rack i bought a couple of months ago. The legs are made from about 2mm steel folded to make a u type shape, wider at the bottom than the top, and the rack itself out of round tubing (no open ends, ie, contiuos loops). The clamps i made out of angle iron with bolts welded on.
Now the problem is the noise, starts at 80Km and by 120 sound like your driving a 747. I have tried taping the u sections up with gaffa tape but it's still noisy.
How do i shut it up!! I have a 4hour trip to Rally of S.A. in 2 weeks and the only way we'll survive is with ear muffs....

Get used to it, i have driven to the Flinders Ranges with a rack on my rangie and there is no way of stopping the noise unless you fit some kind of wind deflector to the front of it. This is why the rack only goes on when we go away !

Actually, a short length of pvc pipe mounted to the front might work and give you a little space for a snatch strap or water even ?

    Silence

Fixed, i cable tied a piece of Corflute (plastic cardboard used for signs) across the front, which is conveniently angled, to make a wind deflector and silence! The theory is the wind blowing over evenly spaced bars resonate, so stop the wind or have unevenly spaced bars. So either a wind deflector or a floor on the rack should stop it.

I was thinking the same, i have a half rack i made for my rangie that i will mod for the disco and also have a sheet of alloy checkerplate sitting around i can use on it - maybe even bend it up on the end as a deflector.
