I use perspex shields BECAUSE I drive on dirt roads in the country - I was about to replace them because of their deterioration - in part due to the stone scars all over them - when an accident recently resulted in my insurance company replacing them (well they only had to replace the right one, but they come in pairs, so they both got replaced). While I follow your reasoning as far as light goes, I would only consider going without them in the city. What I have considered, and would probably have done if they hadn't been replaced, is to fit stone guards to the bullbar rather than the lights so as to be easy to keep clean.

Don't know what globes but mine already had relays fitted and 100/130 watt globes. Even when covered in mud they are bright.

i've just fitted the traxide headlight/driving light combo kit to my 98 d110 and its a big improvement. it was easy to install.

the only thing i changed was insted of running two power cables, one to each realy, i ran a heavier 6b&s cable to the headlight relay and then ran some 8mm from there to the driving light relay. the 8mm cable is only about 120mm long as the two relays are next to each other.

i'm running +30% globes. from what i've heard is, that because the factory wiring is so poor, running brighter globes without upgrading the wiring will only put more load on the switch which is already prone to melting.....mine did.

It is very unwise to run higher than standard globes without relays - not only do you run the risk of damaging the switches, as you found, but the higher current will result in a bigger voltage drop due to the light wiring, and the resulting reduction in filament temperature compared to the standard bulbs means you probably have little more or even less light than you had - filament bulbs' light output is very sensitive to voltage.

I use Altrex 'Light Skinz' which are an adhesive clear vinyl head light protector. They minimise light loss (through reflection) that occurs with an acrylic/polycarb cover as there is no lens/air/cover.
The only downside with them is they are a pain to get to stay on a curved suface. (such as the lens on a Cibie headlight)
