From all the reading I’ve done, a nanocom won’t communicate with anything if it’s not immobilised but I could be wrong. Especially so, seeing as the BCU is the what allows the ECU to do it’s proper function? Again could well be wrong!
I've got immobilised ECU's here on the bench all the time with no BCU hooked up, everything works other than firing the injectors.

Ah ok, that makes sense then. Thank you.

I’ll get onto finding that revision number.

Nanocom is great in what it can do, but it's not infallible.
I think we all get this "can't communicate with ECU" message no matter the state of the ECUs mobilization.

These miscommunications just randomly happen, then suddenly it communicates again. Keep unplugging/plugging or on/off or whatever. Turn key to position II, I, OFF and out and... well just keep trying.

Also, to be sure: if you keep getting miscommunication for a few attempts, also try to get the nanocom into instruments mode too, see if that helps communicate.

What I've done to the nanocom, is to set it to immediately start into instruments mode for the TD5. You can leave the nanocom connected to the OBD port all the time.
So first entering the car, you can touch the screen with your finger for about a sec or so, and it boots up(you will hear the beeps). No matter if you have ignition on/off or whatever. In instruments mode it still boots up and displays the instruments section, just obviously no data.
    Arthur.

All these discos are giving me a heart attack!

Ok thanks Arthur, I’ll have another play while I’m down there today and see if I can get it talking.

Interesting, Arthur do you mean when you turn it on, it defaults itself to instrument mode, or you direct it to such?

How does that look? In typical fashion, you can see the previous owner has had it open at some point

Thanks John, that's what I was looking for.

It's possible the damage on the lid was caused when the TRS tune was installed.

Have you managed to communicate with the ECU with the Nanocom?

If not, maybe pop the lid and check the chip is in the socket ok.

There is also a fuse box under the steering column that has a feed to the ECU, check that as well.

Does the fuel pump run when you turn the key on?

No still no communication with the Nanocom, tired unplugging, replugging, key in each position and almost all menu options.

I did try to pop it open but it was very tight, maybe sealed with sort of adhesive? Is that normal and is there any chance of damage if I use a bit of muscle? I’d hate to break that right before the BCU rocks up.

I will check the fuses, no obvious issue there though. Worth a proper look I suppose!

Yes, strangely it does sound like the fuel pump kicks in. But it pulses almost in time with the alarm sounding.

So alarm sounding doesn’t automatically mean the immobiliser is activated? Wouldn’t it all be negated if the car is armed and alarm going?

You shouldn't break it removing the lid, yes, they are usually siliconed on.

So you can't communicate with the ECU? Can you communicate with the BCU or any other computer?

If the fuel pump is pusing it's running with the alarm sound, you may have an earthing or power problem.

    Will the engine crank?
