    Defender gearing question

what revs does a Defender do at 100kph in 5th?

I read in the General chatter that Pricess Fiona was getting up to 140kph. Has someone put crawler gears in my T/C or are you guys revving your Defenders very high?

If I've got lower gearing, I'll consider an overdrive.

    Mine does 2500rpm @ 100 on 33's
    Now it does around 2400 @ 100 on 35's

And she's been good for just under 160km/h (freakin scary)

I'm running 265/75R16 tyres, which I believe have the same rolling circumference as a standard 7.50R16. But whatever the tyre size, provided the speedo hasn't been changed to match it, the speedo (bieng driven by the gearbox) should give a set speed for a set rpm.

My Tacho reads 3,000rpm at 100kph.

Mine does 2500 rpm for 100K/Hr running the standard Grabbers.
Sounds like you are still in 4th gear.

I've got no tacho but (serious this time) the engine screams over 100k's an hour... it handles it ok and I've had it to at least 140k's but it just feels like it desperately needs a 6th gear.

Haven't disconut and tombraider both made some upgrades.... ie large intercooler and/or chip upgrades.... as I understand it this typcially runs the car smoother. Mines standard.

I have done the chip thing, and, yes its smoooother!
Also have insulated the floor panels and gearbox housing for both heat and noise control. You may have a gearbox / transfer case issue. Have you changed the TX Case oil lately? It may help.

PS. We are talking TD5 here?

Michael - maybe they Tacho needs re-calibrating. 3000 RPM sounds to high at 100. Until I got a Tacho, it thought it was revving at 3000 at 100 (well, that's what it felt like after driving my Discovery).

My TD5 130 on bog standard Michelin XZLs (7.50R16 I think) does exactly 2500 at 100Km/h in 5th.

Anyone know if tachos have any adjustment in them?
