I just happen to have a set of good Discovery 1 seats. Possibilities - options and alternatives... more than enough room to get oneself into trouble.

Then you have to go through engineering.

    Hello Tony,

I looked a bit deeper into other threads and a comment that was frequently made is that the seat box arrangement of the Defender makes the Discovery seats too high and over long distances this positioning becomes uncomfortable.

With a finished job where the only thing non-original part is the seat frame - between the seat box and the Discovery seat base - I wonder how many vehicle inspectors could pick the change up?

I am still exploring options - I need the chassis sorted out first before concentrating on seats.

    Kind regards

I'm sure this has been covered before...

*As mentioned anything that isnt a original Defender seat or looks like a original Defender seat (exmoor trim seats) is going to require an engineer to sign off on, hardley worth it for seats.

*What year is your Defender? as in exmoor do full rebuild kits for all model Defenders.
*You can fit later Defender TDCi seats which are better than the early Defender seat.
*I buy up TDCi seats when ever I see them, AUST and U.K round $1500 for a used pair landed is typical, the one big wreckers in au generally want $2500 for a used pair.
*if they are that bad I then get rebuild kits.

*any seat that requires you to unbolt it to get to the battery in my opinion is a complete crap idea.

*Defenders dont use normal car seats, they use Defender seats

    Hello Dazza,

    January 1993 build

The subject line does mention - Not Exmoor Trim - This clause is due to the cost of international freight charges.

What are TDCi seats and what were they fitted to? Are these the 2006 onwards Defender seats?

I could find rebuild kits for Defenders for a 2006 model, not 1993 - in Australia. This includes foam and upholstery.

In the up to 1993, I could only find either separate seat bases or 1 separate seat back available online in Australia.

There was a good supplier in another country that included the seat upholstery as well as the seat base foam. Then the price of international frieght totally cruelled that idea. Looks like some people have seat bases left and other people might have seat backs left for the 1993 model Defender.

Alternatively, if you have a shipping container coming from either the UK or the USA that has some empty space that could fit trim kits for either a 1993 or a TDCi seat - please let me know.

    Kind regards
    Lionel

    Hello All,

I live in Queensland - which means no annual vehicle inspections. I just walked amongst my spare parts Series Land Rovers - all former Queensland registered vehicles - and three of them have bucket seats.

What happens is that when a car is already registered their owners perform modifications and some do not get them 'blue plated'. Yes, they did run the risk of being pulled over by a mobile patrol - vehicle inspection. Yes, they did run the risk of having the book thrown at them and their incurring fines. Yes, if they were involved in an accident and these unapproved - 'non blue plated' modifications were attributable to causing the accident or worsening injuries, then they would not have had a leg to stand on. Yes, they could also be gaoled.

Two of my long wheel base Series vehicles had their 6 cylinder 2.6 litre removed and one short wheel base had the 4 cylinder 2.25 litre Land Rover motors removed. All three are fitted with Holden 202 motors. Two of these vehicles were previously mentioned because they also have bucket seats. Not a blue plate in sight.

Yes, Queensland is simply a Sodom and Gomorrah of illicit car modifications - well as long as the vehicle is already registered, that is. More is the pity - none of my Land Rovers are registered!

Also, let those who have not sinned cast the first stone - in respect to having a non-engineer approved modification in your Land Rover, regardless of what Australian state or territory you live in. It is one of the advantages of our vehicles is that they can be so easily modified. This is what makes them attractive - because the Series vehicles especially were like big Meccano sets.

    Kind regards
    Lionel

    Hello All,

Looks like the only available full trim kits for the two outer seats are all overseas. I just contacted the most economic supplier and shipped to my door the cost for Exmoor Trim comes in at 1,013.471 Australian Dollars. Note that this price does not include the trim kit for the centre seat.

The cost of freight through the supplier of the product was $4.50 cheaper then cost of the outer trim kit itself.

Hence the subject line - 'Not Exmoor Trim'. Nothing against the product. Just a lot against the price of international freight

    Kind regards
    Lionel

    Hello Fattima,

Thank you for posting the link. That kit is for a 2007 Defender. My vehicle is a 1993 kit. This reflects their being different seat shapes.

The correct re-trim set for my Defender is EXT316-TC - Land Rover Defender 90 and 110 Front Outer Two Seats. Then add Re-Trim Kit Centre Techno - EXT3301TC - Exmoor

I have the part numbers for the separate components such as single seat base foam and then seat back foam. Then there are separate numbers for the upholstery.

    Kind regards
    Lionel

There is so many resources on AULRO, there is a thread on re-covering Defender seats as well as others.

    *TDCi = Defender 2007 - 2016
*before 2007, Defender seats are the same.
*pre-2007 have a single post for the headrest, 2007 - 2016 has twin posts for the headrest.
*typing "defender seat retrim kits" into your fav search engine turns up numerous results both in AU and out of it
*locally just from google - 4wd industries, ebay, landybiz, rovertech
*QLD - there is a good Land Rover wreckers just out of brissy, British Offroad ?

*QLD is nothing special, who hasnt been putting different engines, seats, wheels, lift kits in 4x4's for decades without getting it approved.
*putting some odd ball seat into a Defender, personally is a crap idea and is adding complication to something that really doesnt need complicating.

    DA5627, is vinyl kit grey.
DA5628 is Techno, this was the very common fabric type.
    Regards
    Daz
