Could be air being sucked in through the breather on the filler lid (rather than being blown out) from when the fuel is used. "Loss" of the fuel from the tank creates a vaccum.
Pulled up at my place last night and shut down the beast (TD5 Defender) and heard what sounded like a faint whistle coming from the back of the truck. Put my ear to the fuel cap and seemigly air under pressure was escaping via the fuel tank cap.
Do I have a blocked tank breather somewhere?
The tank is a long range unit, I think fitted by Coopers - might make it one of the Long Range Automotive tanks (think it is approx 145 litre capacity).
Any ideas guys?

thats what I thought spud but I have also been losing some fuel out of the tank cap when the fuel level in the tank is higher.
Dont know if these two things are related?
For those interested (that would be spud) the fuel tank in the Defender is pressurised, can't quite remember how much pressure.
How does this relate to my whistling, leaking fuel cap you ask.
The fuel tank cap in a TD5 has a valve in the top of it which somehow contributes to the controlled pressurisation of the fuel tank. The valve in my tank cap has sh*#t itself and fuel was leaking out of the cap from the side of the key slot (behind the sliding chrome tab on the top of cap).
I have now got a new cap, the whistling has stopped and so has the fuel leak - and I thought fuel caps were simple - what the hell do I know...
Now that I didn't know
Would explain why they are so damn $$$$y
Don't do as I do, and leave then bowsers all over the countryside.

It's happening to my D2 at the moment due to a ruptured fuel line getting air into the system, check for leaks.
Out of interest, how much $ was the cap?Originally Posted by dhumphri

I thought I was wrong once, but I was mistaken.
The cap was $65 from Graeme Coopers.
