    K&N air filter

I have a K&N air filter on the Fender, It came with it, I have service coming up and want to know what the big hooha is with them and wether I should just put an original back in, I don't trust foam as it deterioates it can come off in big disgusting lumps.
Please give me your pros and cons

Get that crap off your Fender before you have foam entering the intake

You just go to super cheap or repco I think and you can buy a K&N cleaning kit follow instructions something like spray on cleaning stuff, wash with water, let dry, spray with oil stuff, put in car etc. Very easy to do.

K & N filters are not foam they are a frabric type and last alot longer than a foam filter and as QSDT has said cleaning kits are available from most auto shops, they are around $25.

Theres alot of write ups on these on Outerlimits, apparently theyt breathe real well, but in doing so alot of dust gets through the filter and can ruin your engine quicker.
    As HSV said use paper.

I have seen plenty of opinions that state that the K&N filters aren't any good at all, BUT, in my personal experience (pod filter on an EFI Holden 308 - no room for the standard airbox) it worked very well. I could let the filter clog so badly that you almost couldn't see the corrugations in the pod and it would still breathe OK (nearly 400 HP) and when I cleaned it there was no evidence on the inside of dirt passing through the filter.

    Ditto my experiences too...

My TD5 intake tract is as clean as, and I drive in dust all the time.

I noticed better response when compared to std filter, and have done the swap a few times to confirm my findings.

I have read somewhere (probably here) that the oil in a K&N filter can leak through and damage the air flow meter.
    Has anybody had that happen?

I say if that happened they put way to much oil on the filter to have it leak off. On my V6 commodore I picked up an extra 90km out of a tank on the highway with the K&N so I've now got one in my Disco. The K&N site say that you can clean them around 50,000km, On my commodore I did it at 30,000km no sign of dust getting in anywhere.
