    Shhoosshh Whooomppp Tick

If you say it really really fast over and over, thats the sound that my V8 D1 has started to make.
Sounds like an air compressor or harley davidson.
I suspect it is an exhaust manifold gasket.
Anyone know a simple way of checking?
In my holden red days I used to use a cold mirror or look for the soot.
Not enough room under the bonnet for mirror and too much oil for soot
    If it's not that what?
Anyone had this annoying problem before?

yes.....start the engine cold.....use your ears to guide you close to the sound then......
put you hand around the manifold....
you dont need to touch the manifold.....just feel to see if the is any exhaust gases escaping.....

you will have a few seconds to do this before the exhaust gets too hot to put your hands anywhere near it......

I dont want to bring bad news but i would be checking for bubbles in your coolant and steam from the oil filler, sounds a bit like a head gasket to me.
If you get it early it will be easy to fix.

    Hi Guys,
    Thanks for the tips.
Good news is that the Shoosh Whoomp bit is not the annoying bit now.
The tick is really getting to me. In my holden red days, I would have replaced the lifters and adjusted the tappets, it's that sort of noise. It's loud enough to drown out the lovely throaty growl of the V8!
I will consult RAVE today and if I can't resolve it, a trip to the LR doctor is on this week.

    Well,
    All's well that ends well.
I do indeed have an exhaust manifold leak. The goo gasket has been blown out a fair bit on number 4 hole. Unfortunately I suspect I may have to have the manifold surfaced as it is probably warped by now.
I was expecting much worse, so yippee an easy problem on a Disco!

Tip for listening to noises in tight spaces

    Hi Ralph,
Next time, cut about 2m off your garden hose - stick one end on your ear and the other end where you suspect the noise is coming from. The idea is that you then have your head away from the motor/exhaust/fan so you can hear more. Also, the end of the hose is a lot smaller than most mirrors.
    Cheers.

It sounds like a perfect excuse to go and buy some extractors to me

mmm the V8 of that age should not have gaskets on the Manifolds. That could be your problem. they run better with out them. Just a bit of gasket sealent and then wack them on

Does the nose sound like your tappets. If so what oil do you run it on
