If I insert a small screwdriver into the cable end and turn it while holding the shaft at the speedo end, I can feel the slipping of the gears, ie cable end turns without the corresponding movement at the speedo.

It only is a problem going forwards. Backwards seems fine.

Even Ford had electronic speeds in the late 70s (XD). This gearbox arrangement is a compromise for a poorly routed cable.

I'm going to strip all 3, and build a composite. I've got nothing to lose except my patience.
I have a fairly new right angle drive on my 84 now. As I am going to the electric set-up you are welcome to it.

I will be going through the terrace on Sat if you want me to drop it off.

I had one that slipped. I needed to shim one of the gears to improve the mesh.

My 76 2DR has a hole drilled just next to the windscreen rubber and a slot in the instrument cover to allow the cable to connect without the right angle drive, was like that when I bought it and works fine!

Dave, whoever did that was a legend.

I've drilled the hole and connected the cable, and it's great.
No more right angle drive piece of poop
