    A frame ball joint

I replaced my a frame ball joint with an adjustable one about 12months ago. The replacement one didn't have a gaiter/boot just a large rubbber donut over the tapered bolt.
I noticed that the rubber donut has split/perished .
Is this rubber donut critical in its operation?
I looked on paddocks UK site and the ones they show just have a rubber gaitor/boot like normal car ball joints.

Might be able to get a boot from Maxi Drive. Mal makes his own (adjustable and greasable) ball joints, so you should be able to buy the boot as a spare part.
