Thread: Disco2 steerage protector bar thingy

Pretty sure the standard steering protector bar on a D2 fits to the outside of the chassis rail. I also fitted some recovery points - 4x4 Design & Engeneering - made from 10mm plate steel and this meant I had to remove the steering protector completely. I have not yet got round to modifying things to re-fit it.

I would suggest the company is either telling you porkies or is talking about something different - I have never heard of it being called a wombat bar, but then I am pretty new to D2's.

I was trying to avoid leaving the protector bar off - I know murphy's law is just waiting for such an opportunity to strike.
I might have to look into having a new bar made up which is a pain. I guess the 4x4 Discovery and 4x4 Design & Eng recovery points would be similar and your points won't fit over the protector bar if you had fitted the points to the inside of the rail?
Of course I could scrap the bar and buy a bash plate / protector plate but this would triple the overall project cost.

It is on the outside of the chassis rail and would not stand a chance against the averagw wombat (have you seen what they do to cars?). Take it off, being tube it's only worth 1 good hit anyway. If you want to retain one or something similar how about a bash plate?

And how much were your recovery hooks?
And did you get two of them?

I'd advise against removing it all together. While it's fairly weak, it does offer the steering box & drag link protection.

Yes I agree, it did mine wonders!!!

Scouse you've got to admit a bash plate would be a better alternative to one though.

back to what i wanted to say.
well the standard disco steering protector bar is just that.
i bent mine and mick g found me another at ricks, which i fitted, but to strenghten it a bit i put a piece of 2 inch waterpipe through it and then added an ally bash plate, from it to the 'roo'bar. now it works a treat.
i am sure the standard bar mounts to the outside of the chassis rails and can see no reason why you couldn't fit rated reco' points here, it is only a bolt length decision,
however i am not familiar with the '4x4discovery' [i presume] company items.

It really depends if you have the front spoiler on your car or not...

I put their recovery points on when I still had a front spoiler... I had no choice but put them on the outside ( to line up with the tow hook hole)

I now have an ARB bull bar.... to I have put them on the inside.. and I have put the steering protector back on the outside - until I get the wombat bar...

Works well
