Noooooooo, my beloved green oval has had its last bastian butchered by the dreaded blue oval freaks. :~( whats with the raised bonnet, those seats look comfortable.... bet theres going to be minimal to no parts interchangeability, (sniffs) why does the aircon look like its ment to be there instead of some aftermarket add in? bet the bloody things even got a decent stereo and sound deadening

I wont buy one, blue ringed freaks.......(anyone got eyes on a spec sheet price list or some preformance vids)

ok narcassistc rant aside, Im not sure I like the sound of the wide ratio 6 speed but at least it looks like it does what it should while looking like it should.

I like it...considering that the Defender does have to keep up with the times, I believe it does that whilst retaining most of the traits that we love in them. The 6 speed sounds useful too (I think its out of the Ford Transit, as well as the engine), and its nice to see the CDL is still there.

Its a shame they havn't retained the Td5 (one less LR original design to soldier on), but it appears this new engine has alot more Torque...same power though.

more torque, yeah, but unless the site I got my torque curves for the td5 is wrong, its higher up the rev range. Not by much but is this the start of the yuppisation of my beloved shed on wheels workhorse vehicle?

as power output is essentially torque units * rpm you can get 1000 units of power 2 ways (these are only demonstratory numbers so are made simple and exagerated)

1 unit of torque per revolution @1000 rpm or
1000 units of torque per revolution @1 rpm

both ways make the same 1000 units of power but if you cant get the engine up to 1000 rpm then the top engine is usless you you. If you use a clutch mechanism slipping 0 rpm to 1rpm is a lot easier than going from 0 rpm to 1000.

that said the engine that only makes 1 unit of torque per rpm will be bucketloads lighter.

    Horses for courses...
ittsy bittsy Tachometer shattering engines belong in F1 racers (read ricers if you like)
Big ass long stroking diesels belong in things that pull hard at low speed.

    just one for pondering...

A single expansion single acting reciprocating steam engine develops peak torque @0 rpm....

I looked at the pics. Looks nice, I think ability would be the same if not improved. I think the only drawback is more electricals and the impact of wading thru water. My 200 TDI does not have this problem.
But I'd love the new one, service every 20,000 KM, not bad!
But that bonnet bulg, relly looks like garbage, I would expect that from holden or ford, dodge, GMC, but not from Landrover!
