Setting the cam on a TD5

OK. So far I can't turn the engine to get no 1 cylinder at TDC with the head still on. Friend has sujested removing the injectors to remove the compression hassles. He has also said to make certain I set it before I remove the head as you almost never get it right afterwards. Any one tried it and how did you do it?

    Hi George
Dont know that the injectors are easily reached, better still remove the 4 glow plugs, just like removing a spark plug. The front 4 pots have them, none on the 5th,the fuel press reg occupys the space.

another way without removing any glow plugs etc is crawl underneath,on the bottom of the bell housing you will see a tin cover held on by 2 small bolts remove this will expose the ring gear you can use a long screw driver to turn the motor make sure you turn the flywheel the right way.I made up two timing tools one to lock the flywheel at TDC and the second to hold the cam in the right place did this when I did the head gasket a couple of months ago

I take it you are doing the head gasket??also get some cable ties and fasten the chain to the sprocket this will stop the chain dropping down the front of the timing cover and when you go to put the head back on cut a couple of the old head bolts above the thread this will help guide the head back on.

Thanks for the hint. I will be trying to set it this weekend and then remove the head.

I suppose you have a blown head gasket?? if you have the earlier TD5 it may have the plastic dowels replace them with steel dowels and if you haven't allready done the exhaust manifold get it planed mine was warped by about 4mm there is a seal at the back of the head behind the cam may as well replace it while the head is off,I also replaced the water pump the bearings were shot but there is no way of telling with it bolted to the back of the power steering pump mine had 158 000 km's

Yep the head has blown or someone has been dumping oil in the coolant. I have already replaced the radiator, welsh plugs and the water pump. Did the exhaust last year but it looks like no 1 has been leaking. A friend is going to get the head checked for warping, cracks and also checking the valve seats. I also finally found the instructions so will be trying tomorrow. Its raining still so I will set the tarp up to keep the rain out.

the injectors can be a bit of a pain to get out I replaced the o rings and copper washers as well and if you are going to pull out the injectors it would be best to replace these.it says in the manual that you can't skim the head but apparently you can get away with it if you don't need to take to much off luckly mine was just within spec.

I have removed the glow plogs and can turn it further than before but I have now bent my bar . Looks like a trip to the hardware to get a big bugger of a bar or maybe some explosives. I'm also considering trying to rig the winch up und use that to turn it.

I wouldn't have thought that it would be that difficult to turn the engine by hand. I can only assume that you have a cylinder full of coolant hydraulic locking the engine. I would suggest removing glow plugs or injectors to allow any coolant out before using brute force to turn the engine.
