    Just a question for you...

I need to weld to a 2006 Nissan Navara as i want to install a recovery point on the front... apart from disconnecting the battery are there any other things i should do? I am using mig welder.

I dunno about WELDING a recovery point on!!!......probably better to use hi tensile bolts to the chassis of the Navara....OOOOps!.....well wot about a nice load spreading BOLT-ON to a major/heavy part of Navara?......or weld a BIG plate on, to spread the load and bolt on a recovery point.......surely they MUST have SOME provisionfor this?....my god! they're a 4WD!!!!

Ok i wasn't very clear.... I tore the std tie down point off a few weeks ago.... I am going to weld some 6mm plate to the chassis and then bolt a rated hook to that.... I am more concerned about frying all the computers. So my question again is it safe to weld to new cars? I know i must disconnect the batt but is there anything else i should do?

mmmmm that's better!....the usual gab/warning re welding is "disconnect battery before...." so you SHOULD be OK.....maybe just check with manufacturer - NOT just local dealer....it's probably still under warranty, so don't take chances in case of damage!

Hi If your battery is disconnected you can weld with no problem to the rest of your electrics.
No offence but if you need to ask this question should you be welding on a car?

It's always advisable to have the earth lead from the welder connected to, or as close as possible to the part you are welding. This prevents the current going where you don't want it to go. I would still check with the manufacturer first though.

Listen noob! I Have welded on heaps of cars just never anything with so many computers in it! Where is the harm in asking a question when you have never welded to a new car. And for the others who replied in a polite fashion thanks for the heads up. I have since spoken to a mechanic mate and I am getting a lend of his spike protector so I don’t have to reset all my OD and clock, radio etc....

oh and Walker..... bleep bleep bleep Edited: Outlaw - a touch over the top
