Yes, since fitting an oil pressure gauge I've been dropping my 4.4 to 7th to crest rises to avoid loading-up the bearings at 1000 rpm and will use 7th on hot days at 100 kph to keep oil pressure up to around 15 psi. The 4.4 has the same big-end and main bearings as the 3.0 except for the rear main and 1 extra main bearing and 2 extra big-ends for almost 50% increase in capacity over the 3.0.

Some small solace you are not alone Toyota copping it lately

Not one spare D4D engine available in Australia

A reasonably low km replacement engine c/w turbos from a front quarter damaged wreck is in-transit, after its oil filter was confirmed free of glitter. Hopefully the sump from the dead engine can be removed for a quick check before new bearings are fitted to the replacement engine in case there's something else that needs preventative maintenance whilst the sump is off.

Edit: The OE sputter bearings will be replaced with heavy duty tri-metal bearings even if bearing wear wasn't the cause of the original engine failure.

The 3.0 doesn't have a separate ladder frame as it is incorporated into the sump. Therefore the dead engine's sump won't be removed for a quick check.
