    Charcoal Cannister

Can anyone tell me what this actually does?

I've identified mine as the source of a intermittant deep vibration on idle. It's definately the culprit as it stops when I remove the two-wire connecter and vice-versa.

    Thanks Ladas,
Sounds like the solenoid is chattering and making the buzzing sound. Don't know if it's supposed to...

Shouldn't do. if you can remove it and clean the terminals might help, if not might need a replacement, but shouldn't be expensive.

i havent read the pdf file above......(to scared to download it on the computer i am using right now.....will look at later on my computer....)

BUT......its job is to absorb all the petrol fumes from the tank by trapping them in the carbon filter......
then....when the engine is running.....it purges these fumes in the air intake for the engine and burns them.....
cleaning out the carbon canister with fresh air in the process.....ready to absorb more fumes from the tank again......

    simple really......

It's meant to only open to suck in and burn fumes at cruising revs....controlled electronically [by an ECM]....so if yours is working @ idle/a bit above, it's definitely NOT working properly - but fault is more than just bad contacts @ plug-in connector

PS my PC closes down Explorer when I try to read a pdf file on aulro.com ONLY!......a glitch in site design???

In case anyone is interested, the stuff inside is called activated carbon, or activated charcoal. It is usually made from coconut husks (the best stuff is anyway). 1cm3 of activated carbon has a surface area of 80000m2. Which is why it is so good at adsorbing petrol vapour and the like.
