I too spent Sunday ripping the clutch master cylinder out of the defender.
I had this damp patch under the clutch pedal on the floor mat but the clutch did actually work.
Yes it is a mongrel of a job. I think the manual does not recognise the version of Air Con we have fitted in Oz. The bit about lift and turn 90 degrees to clear the pedal. yeah right! I used to love that in the Renault 12 manual i had it said "remove using suitable drift" They meant smash it with a bloody big hammer!!
When I got the master out it had a bit of a mark or 3 in the bore. Put a kit in anyway as Ripco wanted $278 for one but did not have one anyway. I thinkRover parts has them for $60 odd non genuine.
It is just a 3/4" Girling with 40mm travel i think.
it is back and working but may leak.... So how much and where do i get it?

James your spot on.
I got quoted 245 original, 180 pommy made
and after market.
Drum roll please
$50, ABS 3/4 bore trailer brake master cyliner. Just brilliant.
I'm still laughing my t_ts off.![]()
Yes - worth pointing out again. And even more to the point, it SHOULD be listed as fitting this application, and you should be able to get it from any brake specialist or trailer specialist.Originally Posted by Stevo_62

Do the trailer brake versions have the same internals and outpot thread?
Or are the stealers trying to charge us $200 for a spring and some widgets?
I asked ripco and they have the trailer brake masters for the $50 mark but he assured me it was not the same? and it would be $278 for one that would "work"!!!!
Many years ago i had the clutch cylinders for my Zephyr "sleeved" and it was just a thin stainless sleeve fitted down the bores. Never had any further trouble and only $15 each. Makes me wonder why they are still made of alloy if they pit and score so easily.
I am in no hurry to swap the new one in though as it was a bit of a pain in the Rs
Mine died about a month ago (95 fender TDi)...Originally Posted by Stevo_62

All up, parts and Labour, around $120.
He mentioned the genuine were a rip off, so I left it to him and couldn't be happier.
You don't often get nice surprises when repairing a landy....

Cheers
So it works now steve...

Funny you should say that because I thought I'd need to replace the clutch master cyl on my series III when I was renovating it a few months ago. I had dismantled the clutch hydraulics to remove corrosion and to free up the piston so I was pretty familiar with what it looked like. Shortly after I just happened to be walking through in the trailer section of Repco and there was my clutch master cylinder, in vacuum molded package, pretending to be some kind of trailer brake. Price (if I recall correctly) $38.
Does this mean it's still the same unit in the Defender as in the Series?
Now if only I could find a brake fluid reservoir I'd be laughing....
