    Question Free spring height?

In the middle of fitting 2" lift to my xtreme wagon, the original coil is the same height free standing as the new raised one. Is the lift in the spring rate or do I have the wrong springs, they are Lovells. I dont want to have to fit them to find out!

More info harro, are the originals rover original or have they been replaced previously, are the new springs a thicker wire. How many coil windings are there.

Yes they are original rover coils, looks to be variable and an extra loop compared to Lovells
Lovell's are at least 1mm thicker.

To give you a lift the springs will need to be a higher rating ie lbs/inch so when they are fitted they won't compress as much. You should be able to pick either thicker steel or less (I think this parts correct) coils per length.

Thanks, they have less coils and are thicker so I will go ahead and fit them.

I recently bought a disco, which had a 2" lift fitted.

These are much stiffer springs than the LRA springs that I have in my rangie with a bigger lift.

I suspect that these are like Bushie (Martyn) described - same free length but higher rate. Where as the LRA springs I have, are longer free length (and lower rate than the disco).

I don't like the stiff springs in the disco and will change them when I get the time.

I suppose there are two basic ways to lift the vehicle - longer free length, or stiffer springs - or a combination of the two (and I suppose you could have a lower spring rate plus a longer free length). And no doubt many arguments over which is the best way to do it! (or you could simply fit spring spacers).
