Rear Differential Markings for 1993 Defender 200tdi

    Hello All,

Just wondering if any one knows the story behind the markings at the top of the rear differential that read

    50
    TUPY
    80-19-008
    100592

The top line has what looks like a capital D laying with the straight line facing down and arranged horizontally to the left of the '50'

The 100592 is contained within a rectangle shape

Then on the driver's side axle there is a mark on a flat face at the back with the number 2236 arranged vertically.

It would be good to find out what these numbers and letters mean or relate to. Any ideas?

Plus what brand of differential is it?

    Kind regards
    Lionel

    Hello All,

To assist with identification here are some additional photographs of Snowy's rear differential.
    1) back view of rear differential
    2) 3/4 front shot of rear differential driver's side
    3) position of vertical numbers on flat face - driver's side of axle tube

    Thank you for your assistance.

    Kind regards
    Lionel

Tupy is a Brazilian casting company.
The numbers could comprise a batch number (for traceability) and a part number.

As the diff housing isn't sold on it's own, only as a complete axle casing, it might be difficult to track down what the numbers relate to.

    It's a Salisbury diff.

    Hello Colin,

Thank you for your reply. I thought the numbers might be like on a Dana differential and indicate the ratios and other information about specifications. Also, thank you for identifying it as a Salisbury diff.

    Kind regards
    Lionel

Stamped numbers might provide other info as they would be stamped when the axle/diff assembly is built.

Cast numbers only tell you about the housing which could end up with different length/design axle tubes and diff ratios when assembled.

The Google AI bot gave me this :-
These numbers reveal the axle type (like 21S or 24S for Land Rover), the gear ratio, and sometimes the build date. For example, a ratio might be stamped as "43/14", indicating a 3.07 ratio
