    Unhappy Diff capacities

Can anyone please tell me why the work shop manual states that on a Disco Series One, the front diff capacity is 1.7ltrs and the rear is the same, and yet when I drained both today and refilled them, that I drained almost 6 ltrs out of both housings.

Could I have had that much water ingress during wading last week. The oil was dark cloudy grey..not milky as described in other posts.

    I'm baffled..

That would mean that each diff was carrying 3 litres....well and truly above the filler plug.

When I did mine the capacities were close to the 1.7 each however the rear smelt and looked different to the front so I kept some in a jar to see if any water settled out...only a smidgen.

have you checked your breather hoses?

oil from overfilled swivels can migrate into the front diff, giving it about 1/2-1 litre over. If the rear is over, it's water. Even a Sals only takes somewhere in the region of 2.3 litres.

I got 2 lts out of the rear (about right) and 3.0 lts out of the front diff (according to the measurements on the side of the drain pan)

The oil was dark grey with a slight milky tinge and white/milky looking bubbles. The reason I suspect it was water is that I have a lot more road noise/humming from the diffs now and suspect the water may have settled and caused some damage!

Should the oil be milky colour (or just dark grey like mine)

By the way, both lots of oil smelled the same--pretty wrotten smelling. My breather on the front is below the level of the front wheel arch-definitely needs to be extended. The rear breather level is not much higher. They are on my to do list.

I do need to re do to swivels with one shot grease--that might account for extra oil during draining. I've kept mine in two 2 litre bottles..will check to see if any settling. Should I check them and drain and refill again. Im worried that I have caused some form of damage to the diffs..is this possible if I left the draining go one-two weeks before doing it?

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

It does sound rather like you have some water in the oil - and it will not settle out necessarily. EP oils have a characteristic smell that could be described as "rotten", but water contamination does not usually change the smell in my experience. The problem with water contamination is not so much the water, although that can lead to corrosion, but there would not be much in a couple of weeks, but the fact that the water was probably not clean, and the grit that came in with it can cause wear, even in a week or two, depending on how much grit there was and how much it was driven. I would certainly check them and consider draining and refilling again. There may not actually be more noise - it could be a psychological effect now you are listening for trouble. The good news is that diffs usually make a lot of noise for a long time before failing.

    Thanks JD.

The water was extremely clean (fresh flowing Aberfeldy River near our main Melbourne water supply catchment-Thompson Dam). I don't think there was much in the way of sediment/gunk in the water-i was drinking it and it tasted great.

I drained both diffs and refilled with EP. I agree that the oil itself is a bit smelly. When i drained second time, oil was much cleaner. Took the truck on a run and still had noise, but I think I have identified the true culprit.

When coasting or under acceleration, if I put my foot on the brakes, the noise/humming quietens considerably. I'm leaning towards the wheel brearings need repacking. The noise seems to come from all directions inside the cabin.

What do you and other's think! Is it a tough job. Is it on the RAVE Cd.

    Cheers

Looks fairly straight forward, and yes it is on the RAVE CD.

Repacking wheel bearings is pretty straightforward - but if it is noisy the chances are that you'll need to replace the bearings rather than just repack them. By the time a bearing starts making noise it usually should be replaced if it has run dry. Of course repacking it will quieten it for a while. They are not very expensive - cheapest usually sourced from any bearing supplier rather than from a dealer or even a Landrover specialist. But not very expensive anyway (The Disco 2 is more of a problem I believe).
