Reversing lights

I've got the Kaymar light pole on my spare wheel carrier and I use this Hella work lamp. It's got twin 55W globes and has an excellent spread of light for about 10 meters either side of the vehicle. Being mounted high also helps. I used to have this light on my SIII and it was so good in comparison to the original Kaymar cheapy that I just had to swap it to the Defender.

Not a Defender, but on my Rangie I removed the original 21 watt globes and fitted 20 watt halogen 'downlights' instead. A little bit of creative modification of the globe holder was required, but a great result.

I have done this mod to several vehicles over the years. No worries with relays, etc, because the wattage and therefore current draw is actually reduced.

Because the new globes have an inbuilt reflector the amount of light is excellent and there is nothing for lowlives to flog.

Just took a look at my reversing lights and the auxilary ones are just wired direct to the back of the factory ones. However I also discovered they are only 20w each and are Hella brand. I tell you watt they are bloody fantastic for only 20w each :D

Hey Ladas, that's an interesting circuit.
When I first looked at it, I thought it was wrong. You have the output coming out pin 30, which is normally the 12V input.
I see why though. Two inputs (87 & 87a) for one output (30).

There's a thread in the projects area to use the aux lights in conjuction with reversing lights and tail lights for automatic and manual operation.

I have the same thought. 87 & 87a are not connected to 30 until the reversing switch is closed. The manual switch would need to be connected to 85 closing the relay and allowing 87 to connect to 30. This will turn on the aux lights plus the reversing lights irrespective of the reversing switch position. You could also put the manual switch around the reverse light switch and get the same result.

Is my memory wrong, that 87a is closed when 87 is open and vice versa?

If not wrong then when the manual switch is closed there will be power out at 30 when the reversing switch is open.

87a is the NC connection on the relay - otherwise there would be no point putting it there.
