I remember with one, either the outer track or the inner & rollers was almost unique to the Land Rover so stupidly expensive.

Exactly, imagine if we had one fail on a 45 or 60mm shaft on an AC Air Handler. Not only would the shaft be wrecked, and possibly the fan drum, but the down time for the repairs would be a huge issue.
The fan drum would have to be built as they are not an off the shelf item.
Even if the drum was not ruined, getting the damaged shaft out of the fan drum is a massive job.
Ditto for cooling towers and Evaporative condensers, where we use bearings regularly.

For a few 100 dollars, definitely not worth the risk.
Quality bearings in the whole scheme of things are relatively cheap, and are generally the cheapest part of the job.

Oil seals are the same,a relatively cheap item, why would one not use genuine?
    Gearbox,axle,crankshaft,diff seals,etc.
