It's good to question things. I appreciate the thoughts.

So, the specialist was using Valvoline synpower 5-30.

I then switched to valvoline synpower 5w-40 figuring a bit thicker would help.

After a 5000k desert trip I did an oil sample and it came back with.

Viscosity low for specified oil grade at 40 degrees C.
Viscosity slightly lower than typical at 100 degrees C.
Apparently the td5 injectors are known for creating shear.

    From AI

Yes, while not in the original Land Rover manual,
fully synthetic 5W-40 or 5W-50 oil meeting the VW 505.01 specification is highly recommended for the Land Rover Td5 engine. It is considered ideal because the Td5 uses unit injectors (similar to VW "Pumpe Duse" engines), and this oil provides necessary protection against cam and lifter wear.
    Penrite hpr meets VW 505.00.

    The main difference between
VW 505.01 and VW 505.00 lies in their intended engine application, specifically regarding "Pumpe-Düse" (PD) unit injector diesel engines.

    • VW 505.01 (Introduced ~2000-2004): Formulated specifically for VW diesel engines equipped with Unit Injector (Pumpe-Düse or PD) systems. These oils have specialized additive packages to handle the high pressure and extreme shear forces on the camshaft and lifters in these engines. It is a "low-SAPS" oil, meaning it has lower ash content, which is often required for modern emissions systems.
    • VW 505.00 (Pre-2000): Formulated for older Volkswagen turbo diesel and non-turbo diesel engines without unit injectors. This is an older, 1990s-technology oil specification.

    • Do not substitute: Using 505.00 in a PD engine (which requires 505.01) can lead to increased camshaft and lifter wear over time.

The ravenol I linked above is a PAO ester oil that meets the VW 505.01 standard. It's not that expensive compared to what the specialist was charging for Valvoline FE. Neither the valvolines meet this spec. The penrite doesn't meet 505.01.

So I don't dislike penrite oils. I use them for various things. It's just that I think the oil I'm using is less than ideal. I used the ravenol MTF-2 in my gearbox and it was a game changer, so I thought I'd try their engine oil which meets the spec and is not that expensive.

If I do give it a whirl I'll test the oil and report back.

The TD5 is a pretty tough old thing though. I'm sure the penrite would be fine.
PS The specialist were charging $140 for 7.5l of valvoline synpower FE
PPS the oil valvoline reccomend for my car is synpower 5w40 which was what I was trying.

My partners car has a VW PD engine. I run Penrite Enviro+ EU 5-30 in it ENVIRO+ EU 5W-30 (FULL SYN.) | Penrite Oil
This meets VW 507 00 that has replaced 505.1. Just thought I'd throw it out there for a local option if you are concerned about oil that suits PD engines.
