MMMM could be bad fuel but being a v8 you will use that pretty quick id replace the fuel filter that would be a cheap easy fix if thats the problem
Hi All,
I have had my '98 Disco V8 Automatic for only a couple of weeks now and there have been a few times where it wouldn't start first go. It would sound like it was going to start but as soon as I released the ignition it would just die. I would then try again and it always started second time around.
After this hapenning a couple of times I realised that I was probably trying to start her up to quick and not giving the fuel pump a chance to kick in. So I slowed down a bit and now wait for the whine from the tank to stop before starting her up. This has worked and only once has it failed to start first go since doing this.
I thought all was solved until last night where it didn't sound like it was going start but it did and as I was driving and slowing down at a set of lights the engine just stopped.I started it up again and it kicked over first time and I got home with out any more trouble.
It has only done 70,000kms and before me was used just as a city car, they would fill the tank once every 6 weeks. A major service was done on the car about 6,000 kms ago but it has been almost a year since then. I will be booking one in for next week at Grahame Cooper.
It drives great, has plenty of power, idles smoothly, doesn't blow smoke. I'm thinking maybe a fuel pump or filter problem? Any ideas?
Cheers,

Under what conditions does this happen??
My 93 Rangie with 14CUX, always dies when I put into drive or stalls first try when the engine is just coming up to fully warm, say when you drive 1.5Km to the newsagent, duck in and straight back to the car.
I think the mixture compensation in the ECU is Juuust too lean at that point.
Mine has retained this through 3 dyno tunes, 2 inlet manifolds , all new sensors so I assume that it is a characteristic of the ECU.
The temp sensor probably has leaned the motor but the motor is just a little too cold to keep going.
Do not worry about it if your circumstances are as I have described.
Regards Philip A.
Rangieman: I will probably wait for the service and get them to do it.
PhillipA: This has happened under varying circumstances. A couple of times it has been in similar situations which you explained but last night the car was sitting there for about 2 hours after a short 3 km drive when I started it and then it stopped running while driving.
I haven't really been too worried about it until it stopped last night. I'm still getting to know the car and it seems to be running really well other than this.
Gee!.....I've NEVER had that problem [restart after really short drive] .....well only in late 80's (88 + 90) RR 3.5i's.....NEVER in a 95 RR or a 93 Disco....shouldn't happen in a 98.....Originally Posted by PhilipA

Could that cause the engine to stop dead while driving?Originally Posted by incisor
Mine did the same when I bought it a few weeks ago. Got the "throttle body" cleaned properly by a mechanic I use and its been tops since then. Also started using the "Injector Cleaner" from Flashlube and its great stuff. Cleans the injectors and the car idles beautiful now. The petrol consumption is heaps better now as well. Just thought I'd give it a shot after I started using the other "Flashlube" stuff for lead replacement in my S3.
Im not mechanical at all mate and wouldnt know about more serious stuff but thought I'd bob my two cents in as well.
Hope you get it fixed mate!
Cheers
Thanks f_b, every bit of advice helps. I was thinking about that Flashlube stuff, how much has it improved petrol consumption? Do you use it in every tank full or only now and again? I might give it a go.
Cheers
yep, and start and run for a few moments then stop, not start, miss, and all sorts of wonderful things. Only major problem i ever had with my v8 when i had it. soon as it was replaced just about every foible it had vanished. i then fitted magnecor ignition leads and it got rid of the rest and i got 475k - 500k out of a tank around town from then on. prior to that i got 450k-475k. and i am not easy on the peddle....Originally Posted by rocky2509
