    Not for me, Gunga Din.
That is probably one of the most ridiculous comments i have ever heard, and where do you think every other car maker puts the 3rd row seating ? - right over the fuel tank, i suppose the steering wheel facing forward is stupid too?

Ladas, in a Disco 1 the last row seats are little things that fold out from the sides and according to my mob they're just not comfortable, nor is the overall seating position...and they only have lap belts...but we use them on short hauls for a mob of kids and mates, like to weekend sports where car pool. If the seats themselves were a bit more comfy, I doubt I'd hear probs as they like the vast head height and the roof top windows. But with 7 on board there's bugger all room for cargo...Personally I'd like to see them in a lap shash belt, not just a lap.

In a Disco 2 the rears face forward and and much more substantial from what I've seen

In a Disco 3, crikey! Limo territory here.

Love to have a DVD in car, but the scenery will have to do...

Loanrangie: Yup. If I got hit that hard in the rear end we'd all be cactus, the back of a Disco is a very hard and high piece of metal.

4bee: Your point is valid but a Disco is not a Falcon, Commodore or Camry allroad (what do they call that thing?) wagon.

My lot ride in other 7 seaters and really don't like the lack of space in the rear of the Volvo XC90, Territory, MB ML.

Taragos have the space but they wouldn't be seen in such, such is teenage fashion - but i say to them - you could walk...20 kms to netball...15 mins by road but kids how many hours on foot?

When I had my D1 - I fitted a 5 point harness belt to each side facing seat. The comfort value, I guess, would be limited as the size of the 'cargo' increases - my two boys were quite small when I ran the D1. Wouldn't be too good if you have a couple of 5' + teenagers.

Additional baggage - went in the roof top box.

The D2 I have now - the front facing seats are much more substancial, but the 5 point harness has been transplanted, however they still do not off a great deal of room to a long offspring - my now 10 year old is just about reaching the limit - but the trips that he has to 'endure' this are seldom - and generally quite short.

If you have a peek at my avatar. This was the result of a tip over - off a bridge, caused by a blown tyre on a dirt road - with the two boys in the rear side facing seats - the eldest who was 8 at the time - said "bugger me" as he climbed out of the broken window - unscathed - apart from a little surprise.

In my view the LR range are one of the safest cars on the road (and off) - and off a great deal of all direction safety to the occupants, and anybody who suggests I would ever put my children at risk - is way off the mark.

Crickey Ladas! Looking at that pic, you landed on your head. I can only assume that all of you came out okay, ouch........

But you've made a very valid point, your boys were safe in their five point harnesses, which is a lot more than the standard lap only setup, which concerns me given i have (these days rarely) rear riders.

My youngest is now nine y.o. and once loved the novelty of riding in the rear, as did my, tomorrow 13 yo, (Happy Birthday Alex), but he's nearly 6 feet tall and doesn't really dig it anymore.

I have an aversion to putting things on the roof, once I drove to Perth (ex Syd) with a roof full of stuff and the fuel consumption was awful, until I stuffed all that gear elsewhere, and before that sortie, I had a roll over, due in part to stuff on the roof which shot the centre of gravity. And on top was 20 gallons of juice on an old Series 2 LWB, things we do when we're young and don't know better. But jerry cans don't go bang thankfully for me.

    Cheers, GQ

Yep all fine, I landed on my head - missed my brain by at least 4 feet

..........I have one of those plasticy roof box thingies - and it only takes 50 kg max - so I tend only to put the lightweight things in it - you know clothes etc.,

...............the kids were told to hold the jerry cans on their laps (JOKE)

    Well, what an amazing response.
Thanks to all for the invaluable comments and especially to Ron and Stubee for the offers. I'll be following up on both of these and also the comments in the 'wanted' section.

    Roger
