    squeek in dash (defender)

Somebody help, I've got a very very irritating squeeking noise coming form somewhere in my dash. Its like there's a mouse getting strangled in there. I've tried everything short of taking the dash completely to pieces and reassembling it. Has anyone had this problem? fixed the problem? or is my car just trying to communicate?

    cheers
    Jimmy

That's one of the features of the vehicle. I'm sure you'll find it in the spec sheet at the dealer, it's one of those options fitted to all Landies at no extra cost!

Really though.......if it's bugging you that much you'll probably have to pull it off and hope you don't make it worse when you re-assemble it.

OK, I am an expert Sqeak Hunter, just chased down three in my dash and surrounds.

First, are you sure it is in the Dash. Noise in these things are like teeth. Often the Pain is referred, with a sympton like it is coming from one place, but is actually another.

Mouse-like squeak, if your dash is like mine, left near the ignition keyhole, 2 moulds come together, if these mildy vibrate together then you will have this symptom. Force your finger hard against where the moulds meet whilst driving. (To see) Don't do this whilst driving all the time. I hold no liability to any accident you may have as a result of this suggestion. Just my opinion.

Also, follow the sound down and see if it is coming from floor panel of tunnel housing screws which may be loose.

I had another squeak which was some cable running in the engine bay over the air filter canister, and that was referring through the dash even though I could not hear it in the engine bay (being a 3.9 D)

Check the Demister Blower in top of dash, as they rattle a little if loose as well.

If you can not resolve yourself, and Squeak persists by ear plugs.

    Good Luck.

    Squeak squeak

I had a squeak which turnerd out to be the speedo cable that had been pushed in too far causing it to kink and therefore sound like a mouse on steroids. I just pulled it out a little through the grommit on the firewall and the mouse was gone

First thing to do to solve the problem is to check whether the kids pet mouse is missing

Are you sure it's in the dash?
I had what I thought was a similar thing, turned out to be the rubber/plastic? lugs that the bonnet hinges into.

    Squeaks rattles and thumps

i found a wonderful device designed specifically to pretty much eliminate all background noises.

    MP3 Player--- great device.

    good luck with the noise.

FWIW - My 'dash' squeak is actually in the driver door.

I just wind the window down & squeeze the door trim back into place to cure it.
