Timing belt destruction....

Guys
Be attentive as to whose manufacturer of belt you are installing.

There are a lot of poor imitations out there and the Dayco brand is the belt of OE choice which should give you at least 60K miles on that application.

I would be interested to know what was the nature of the failure shredded, or teeth torn off.
Some of this stuff can get down right financially scary if it lets go, especially if you are dealing with a Freelander V6.

80K change intervals, fit all the idler and tensioner, and an upgraded lower crank pulley too . the kit STC4096L has all this in it. Doesn't include a front crank seal, ERR4575, you will need that too. Like Pat says just change it on time and you shouldn't have any issues.

I'll second that. My belt suffered the known issue of sliding along the crank pulley and rubbing against the case, wasn't changed when it should have and was still running fine at 140,000kms when I changed it. There will always be a few unlucky cases (perhaps not fitted correctly) and poorly maintained vehicles - they're what you hear about. If my crappy factory one lasted to 140,000 then I feel pretty comfortable going 80,000 on a new one.

Toyota 1HDT , belt and tensioner less than 20,000 klm since replacement, broke middle of a 3 month trip, = bent valves + holes in pistons , seized cam, for all I know probably a bent rod or two as well.

So happy that the Td5 does not use a timing belt.

Just replaced the cam belt on my 98 Defender 300 TDI. I had replaced the belt 200km ago but it shredded 150km from home. I had not paid enough attention to the idler tension. I had tensioned the idler by guess and had over tightened way way too much. The result was 2 broken rocker arms and 4 bent push rods. New cam belt, replaced rockers,push rods and she lives. Idlers tensioned to 11Nm. I have photos but don't seem to be able to add them to this post. Ah well I guess you can use you imagination.

Yep! vital part of the install is to be sure that the crank gear is of the dual lipped type, change the inner front main seal, and the correct torque of the tensioner.
Best torque wrench type is the beam type.
Easy to hold at the correct setting whilst securing the locking bolt
