Disco 2 - Manual to Auto Conversion

    Hi all,

We picked up our 99' manual Disco 2 about 2 months ago. Got the manual as it was a price too good to pass up. The problem lies in the fact that due to medical reasons my wife cannot get a Manual Licence here in QLD (long story) and she really wants to drive the D2.

How much $ and difficulty is there in converting the manual to an Auto. Is it worth just selling the vehicle and starting again ?

Any help would be most appreciated.

    Anthony

Would be easy to do but will cost more than if you bought an auto in the first place, the auto would cost approx. double what you would get the for the manual box plus there will be some electronics involved and the asscoiated small parts like an auto brake pedal etc.

You could probably make it very straight forward by using the Disco1 auto instead of the Disco2 auto. They are both ZF 22's, except the D2 has an electronic control that comes into the rest of the computers, where the D1 is stand alone AFAIK. If you do change it to an auto without the computer you will lose your cruise control as the wheel speeds will never match the engine speeds in gear. Then again, will the D2 auto just plug into the D2's loom and then tell the compter that its not a manual anymore, its now an auto perhaps?

Option 1 - Convert what you have now. Problem is that Landrovers have bad enough resale as it is and converting a manual to an auto will only make it worse. Would you buy a converted auto when there are thousands of factory autos to choose from?

Option 2 - Sell the manual Disco and buy an auto Disco. If it has only been 2 months then you shouldn't lose much.

Option 3 - Buy your wife her own car. That way you can play with your Disco whenever you like without her wanting to take it shopping right when you have all the suspension sitting on the floor in the garage.

Option 3 is what we did
