    No brakes

    Sunday out at the Watagans.

Ended with the brake warning light coming on as we were coming down the hill back to civilisation. I still had full brake pressure, until we stopped.

On restarting the Rangie I had pedal travel with no brake pressure. i.e. Brakes only work if you stand on them. I've got a 93 rangie with ABS. My Mechanic not being confident enough to attempt to fix the Rangies ABS...."Don't know much about Land Rovers Mate" (Now you @#%$*@ tell me!!! )

He tells me with the symptoms its probably a loss of vacuum, but he can't find the hoses....

Iv'e looked and I can't find them either.????

Need the wisdom from those in the know.
    1. What is it
    2. Where is it
    3. How the #$%& do I fix it cheaply ???

From memory, a 93 Rangie with ABS doesn't have a vacuum booster. It uses a pump and a nitrogen filled pressure accumulator to provide the braking force. I have had to replace a pump in the past, quite expensive and the bleed procedure is very long winded. You would need a manual to do it properly, I can't recall off the top of my head how it went.

    In summary,

    1: ABS Pump,
    2: Under the bonnet son,
    3: You can't.

The cheapest fix is to fit standard vacuum brakes from an earlier RR.

Look here for info on your brakes - same procedure as P38A.

    http://rangerovers.net/repairdetails/abs.html

    http://rangerovers.net/maintenance/brakebleed4.html

Yours has a remote accumulator whereas the P38A has its attached to the pump.

Check that the fuse to the pump is OK. If the puimp is running, how long does it take to get brake pressure? Anything ocver 45 seconds probably indicates a failing accumulator.

ABS pump under bonnet drivers side up by firewall,
turn ign on u should here pump spin up (no noise bad)
check all elect con into pump.

depending on whats wrong can be a fairly cheep fix but on the others side could be dam expensive

Not to rain on your parade Ron but methinks this may be illegal, by pulling the ABS out of the vehicle your removing a safety feature, or have I latched onto the concept incorrectly....

did you meant replace the whole abs box and dice from the master cylnder down and replace with a vaccum boosted unit?

or add a vaccum booster in addition to whats allready in there?

Oh, very likely illegal. I know that complete removal of the ABS and replacement with the braking system from an earlier model is relatively common in the USA.

But in all likelihood, no one would ever know because it would look like any other earlier model RR.

you should have some spare fuses in the fusebox behind the gear lever.....

I replace the blown fuse as it wasn't A Standard run of the mill size fuse this arvo, no luck I blew another 2 just to be sure...lol

The fuse in question is the: 30amp Hydraulic pump relay fuse (slow blow(wasn't that slow trust me))
Does this mean the relay is Fooked or something more nasty??

I also lost Cruise control on the way upto Stockton Beach Saturday Morning.
With the Cruise control needing the braking system are the 2 related ?

    Please tell me o'wise one's
