    New old Rangie

    I picked up my new old Rangie last week, an 83 auto V8 LPG, and finally thought that I'd take it up that back for a spin.

    Things were going well, until the hard stuff was coming.

    What went wrong? Well, it was a blackout.

    Everything electrical died, and that was just the start. Found and pulled the bonnet release and the cable came out! Oh sheet. A little coaxing didn't help, neither di banging and twisting the bonnet. Not even the dog on the bonnet would release it!!! I found a bit of wire that was on the bullbar and bent into an S shape, so I figured that its purpose in life must be as a dodgy bonnet release doobie. After a while I realised that this wasn't the case. A bit more farting around with it and time to find the cable - na, not going to happen. Found everything but the cable considering the bonnet was locked. Finally I found it! You'd never believe it

    Yep, it had two bonnet release thingys inside the car.

    Anyway, the previous owner had done some wiring to make sure she was still a goer, and sadly had routed the wire's through the exhaust manifold, and ze wire had melt. Oh well. I'll have to pull it out of the bush and sort it out. I cant blame this one on Lucas, or perhaps I can. Is the wirer the son of Lucas? Would the wiring had to have been done if Lucas wasn't there at the start? Why is the world round.

    I had a Triumph 2500PI and it stopped a few times for no reason...well there was a reason and it was because it became airborne a few times then stopped dead. On the firewall, passenger side, was an impact dead switch, a a grey barrel thingy, took a while to figure that out the first time........

    Oh well, I'm back again. Fortunately it was just up the back and I could walk back. One of the kids here were kind enough to come out and help me tow the bugger out of the bush and home again. I'll probably do the exorcism of Darth Vader on the weekend and have another go at playing silly buggers with it after that. At least its home.

    I'm not sure what the long term destiny for the old girl is yet. I have not yet developed that irrational love for it, unlike the Disco and Series. If it keeps this up though I'll take it out the back and give it the thrashing it deserves. A lot of the reason I have it is for the gas system in it. I'm planning to put that into the Landy IIa and hoping to pick up the govt rebate - which will then pay for the Rangie which I'll probably then sell cheap as is. The disco and IIa are enough 4WD's.

    I notice you had trouble getting the bonnet open. I have a trick I use to open the bonnet without the cable, and I do this every time I need to open it (quicker than bending down for the wire). It is an '83 right?

    At the first 'E' on the RANGE ROVER lettering, slide your finger under it, through the grill, and find the lever the wire pulls on to release it (should be to the passenger side a bit from there). Curl your finger around it and pull.

    This should pop the bonnet up. You may want to make sure its nicely lubed up, as it may hurt your finger otherwise.
