I also find the ABS a pain to stop on dirt roads in the Rangie. ABS systems vary from car to car. My son has a Nissan Pulsar which is even worse than the Rangie. I used to have a Subaru Liberty and that was great on dirt roads with the ABS. Not as good as the rally cars I drove for 27 years but good for an ABS vehcile.

The Rangie is like the Nissan, it does not take much for the ABS to start working giving virtually no stopping power on dirt as the ABS is too long in the no braking mode.

My son has raced his Nissan from time to time on dirt and always takes out the ABS fuse - I also did the same the one time I raced to Subaru on dirt (aint compnay cars great).

There are a couple of fixes, firstly, I am aware of the heaps longer braking distance so I drive accordingly, it is a pain but you have to be safe. Second thing I could do is to get more agressive tyres (AT's or preferably MT's) on the Rangie rather than the road tyres it currently has. That would also improve the TC, especially when near sand - maybe I will get new more aggressive tyres one day but with an expected $10,000 bill for the boat due any day now, new tyres are last on the list.

As for pulling the ABS fuse, I have not done it on the Rangie yet but used to do it on the Freelander when the Traction Control was hindering progress eg on soft sand.
