I have to say I've been blown away by the level of support you guys have offered! You've restored me from a crippled mess, shivering in the corner at the thought of a $6k overhaul bill.
I spoke to Mat on the phone an hour ago, he offered some very sound words of advice and I'll be following them through. Hopefully after a second opinion on the neccasary repairs I'll be back on my way.
On another note, this is the first forum I've every joined, and I've been nothing but impressed by your responses. I'll use the money I save from that 6K bill and buy you all a beer!
Thanks again!

I've decided I'm going to obtain a second opinion from a mechanic here that Mat recommended. Following that I'll descide what to do depending on the urgency surrounding the various issues.
Tony, Mat mentioned you were a bit of a master at teaching the ways of land rovers. When I know a bit more about what I'm facing I may take you up on your generous offer to hire out your workshop.
Cheers again for all your help!

if you are able to tackle some of the work yourself.......if warranty doesnt cover it.....
just ask here whats involved and how to do the job etc........
you will start with a rave cd (available through this site cheap) which is a workshop manual.......
most of the jobs listed are simple....except for removal of the gearbox.....
its easy to do...but because of its size
and the transfer case attached to it...it can be fun.....
plenty have done this on here without any knowledge on mechanicals.....
just the guidance of others on this forum......
but after the job is done...they are happy to have saved a heap of dollars and learnt and understood
more about their own car and how it works.....which makes finding faults out in the field easier......
dont be too scared to give things a go......and make sure that the timing belt is changed......
then the tail shaft you mentioned......
MikeB:
I know its a bugger having an issue like this but, as you have said, your new purchase is under warranty - it's the dealers problem!!! or off to the "Office of Fair Trading"; and get moving or your 12 weeks will disappear very quickly. Do it now.
Good luck and keep us posted,
cheers, GQ
Mike
Dunno where you are in Oz, but if it's not too far away - and there are things left over after the warranty items have been sorted
I'd be happy to have a weekend away to assist - I have a reasonable tool kit - but if we needed any special tools might need to beg, borrow or steal ...........
The times quoted are over double the book time in some instances:Originally Posted by tony

As for the quote to replace engine seals as required, book time to strip & rebuild the entire motor (except head) is only 21.60 hrs![]()

To save you any further headaches, I'll give you $5000 for it as it obviously is a basket case.

Howdy,
Has been a full on weekend, sorry about the delay on an update. Thanks Tony once again for the offer of support. Hopefully it wont be needed as the dealer has come to the party as far as repairs are concered. I'm taking the vehical down on Tuesday to get most of the items fixed. I'll post an update when I pick her up on Thursday (fingers crossed).
Scouse, I've allready fallen in love with my Disco - It'd take more than $5k to make me part with her......how does $6k sound?![]()
Cheers all, your advice confirmed I was being taken for a ride and hopefully all will turn out O.K.
Till later,
-Mike
