    Tyre Moron.

    Hi.

My 130 tray back is stock standard. I fiddle around with it with mech issues, no worries! But i get stuffed up with tyre sizes " dumb chit i am", What is the best sized tyre to fit to a standard defender for 50% on 50% off road work. Thanks. Thought i would ask here first, before some grubby tyre dealer.

I'll probably be lynched for this...

The olympic Steel Trek in 7.50R16 size, the same one the ADF uses on the 110 and 6x6, is one of the only tyres Ive seen reviewed that scored over 50% on all of the tests involved. (the review was about 6 years ago now so there is probabley something better out there but I Know where to get the treks stupid cheap)

Other tyres had some areas where they massacared the Treks but then they had some areas where the Trek shone over them...

a decent compressor and pressure gauge is the secret to getting the best out of them.

If I was only allowed one type of tyre for my vehicle for the life of the vehicle the Trek Gets my vote.

If it were me then I'd be looking at one of the following:

    Goodyear Wrangler MTR - 235/85/16
    Michelin XZL - 235/85/16 or 750/16
BFG MT or AT - 235/85/16

The Michelin are more of an 80% off-road and can be a little 'skittish' in the wet. The MTR & MT are both excellent all rounders.

As per Camel_landy except I'd steer clear of the BFG AT, especially if you're going to drive on any rocky ground as the tread just crumbles over rocks. BFG MT is a much better tyre.

The Goodyear Silent Armour in 235/85R16 might be another choice.

And also in fear of a lynching Cooper Discoverer S/T in same sizings.

Another vote for the Michelin XZLs. They were the original fitment tyre for a 130. Pretty good in the wet, given their big tread pattern, but not noisy and really really good in the mud.

Don't forget to match tyre load rating with your original 130's tyres, as some insurers will have a hissy fit if you fit a less than specced tyre to a vehicle like this, even if you aren't carrying the weight.

My guys told me that you can't get the Michelin XZLs anymore. Does anyone know what they have been replaced with?

I got told the same thing by a couple of places, so I rang Michelin direct. They had 40 in stock and would ship overnight. They suggested I use Bob-Jane as a retail point, and so Bob-Jane organised it all for me. This was only 6 months ago, so I'd be surprised if they had been discontinued.
