    When to change muddies

    I've got a set of hankook muddies on my defender and noticed that the tread has worn down to the indicators on pretty much every tyre.

    But there's about 5mm tread left.

    When I was up at Aces bbq a few months back, I was slipping and sliding on the mud... couldn't get up slopes that bluddy japanese hiluxes were climbing up.... mind you pressue was about 30 psi and when I let them down to 20 it got much easier.

    Car feels fine on the road, but then roads have not been slippery lately so who knows what they are like in the wet.

    I've heard that once muddies loose about half their tread they are pretty much useless, but I guess this means useless in the mud and dirt?

    Normally with car-tyres once the tread is worn to the indicator (i.e. 2mm) you should change them... usually the car corners and steers like crap anyway.

    I would rather play it safe, but what do you guys reckon.... This is the first time I've ever had a vehicle with muddies so I'm not sure what the deal is?

    i think that even with 20 psi in them.....that may have still been too much pressure.......

    and the best part of any tyre is the first 3mm of tread.....after that performance drops off.....
    you can only compare those to new muddies.....yes...new muddies will perform alot better......

    but compared to a road tyre or similar......they will be pretty much the same......unless the road tyre is worn.....then there is no comparison.....

    um.... no, I think it makes sense

    so worn muddies are as good if not better than worn road tyres.... let's say until they reach the 2mm mark

    but off road probably not so good.... but I should drop the pressure right down and it should be sweet

    hell IMHO worn muddies beat new roadies off road.

    tyre pressure selection is easy, when they start slipping hop out replace the valve caps with stauns set to 15psi have a coke/beer remove stauns and replace valve caps.

    Minimum tread depth legally allowed on the road varies from state to state and 2mm tread depth is just above that number so if your under that change em.


    I had a nasty near miss this weekend with road tyres at 44psi on a wet clay/hailed on track that Im certain wouldnt have happened if the CDL hadnt dropped out of lock (nother thing to get warenteed) and ID been on any other rubber Ive used before.
