well i knew all you auto guys would come out and bat for auto,s
it astounds me how you can bag a guy you dont know or seen his skills

i have been 4wdriving with this guy for 27 years he has owned this disco for 6 years and he and i have done many a trip over the years in series landies and his disco i trust his skills better than most of you so unless you were there and saw it dont judge him

all a side i put this post up to let people know the draw backs of auto,s not to hang sh#t on any one

to watch this all unfold was not very nice , i wish i had a video to prove this but there will always be the knockers
there was also a forum member on this trip ill see if he is game enough to stick his head up to take shots also

i dont care what all you pro auto drivers say walk a mile in this mans shoes in that spot

ill challenge any auto driver to drive down this hill after me and in the wet and i bet you my jocks wont be a brown mess

even this mans dad who is retired said and i quote that even if they cut both his legs off he wouldnt buy a automatic 4wd and his dad has plenty more experience than some of you pro auto guys

like i said and ill say it again and again a manual is by far better in that situation you can not ignor the truth and facts
or you are living a dream

I am sorry if you thought that I was hanging fertilizer on anyone this was NOT my intention! I will stand by I said. In any situation where something is going wrong or goes not according to plan there is always something to learn.

For the record, I would prefer a manual but my disco came with an auto, and you get used to driving it especially with towing an auto is just awesome

I still don't like the idea of letting the HD take over and not touching the brakes, tis scary stuff, but it works.

Rangieman it would be good if someone here that was close by and had a auto and was brave enough could go back there with you and drive both cars down the hill and video it. Not to stick it up auto drivers or manual drivers but to compare so we could all learn a little from it. Never to old to stop learning. Any one close by with an auto that will have a go at it?

Im only new to 4x4, so I cant speak with any real authority here. I have an auto tdi, and as yet to go do a 4x4 training course (fully booked out and still 5 weeks before the day!!!) but I hear that autos are used by the extreme 4x4 comps because its more 'controllable' etc etc. So why then say that autos arent as good as manuals when autos are being used for these activities? Just a question, not an argument

I recently did an LROC(Sydney) 'Tuff Trip' in my Tdi Auto (with ABS) where we went down a long, very steep descent which I think the trip leader said was the steepest incline he'd ever attempted. The other vehicles were all Defenders or Rangies. I locked the auto in low first and feathered the brakes which gave me control but was still going faster than I wanted to.
It was suggested that I pull up a couple (or more) of handrake notches as well which I did on the second part of the descent and the control was much improved.

    Beautiful
Which uses the ABS to slow the car down without locking the wheels, something you can do yourself by just applying the brakes, gently.
