    DII: Clicking noise and binding

My '99 DII has developed a strange clicking noise when close to and on full lock and at the same time the cars seems to brake itself - feels like something is binding. Happens going forward or back. It has just had its 2nd set of new 265/75R16 BFG muds fitted and the steering stops have been adjusted slightly to avoid any rubbbing. It was also doing this before I changed to the new muddies.
It had new maxi drive CV's fitted about 30,000k's ago. New tytres are fitted to my LR steel rims and were balanced at the same time. Not sure if it is related but it has a slight steering wheel wobble as well, which I wasn't expecting after having the wheels balanced - any chance they haven't balanced them properly or do you think this is related to the clicking and binding?

All help and suggestions appeciated, Mick

    noise

    Hey Mick
Firstly I will drop your compressor and swag back this week, thanks for them.
With the noise I would check that your centre diff is not locked as you dont have a indicator light, just the switch???.
If that is not locked, jack up the front end and turn to full lock and spin the wheels and listen to the CV,s just in case. Whilst your under it check your uni joints, ABS and brake lines. If you cant find anything bring it over to my place and we will stick it on the hoist and have a look.

    Regards Justin

I have this strange clicking noise too, mine comes from the rear left side and for the life of me i can't find it.

It's there mainly when offroad and in rutted stuff or turning sharply.

    Cheers Baz.

    Bingo............................................. .........................

Note to self, make sure the CDL is switched to the off position before driving around town Due to an elaborate electrics set up in my DII plus a blown bulb on the CDL actuator switch (anyone else have the AMV CDL with the blown bulb?) I seemed to have overlooked the fact that perhaps my son has flicked the switch while I was cleaning the car the other day.....you live and learn

Cheers Justin, always check the simple things first

I don't have a light on my CDL switch, but the dash indicator is always on when i engage it, this tells me it's on. Don't you have the CDL indicator on the dash Mick.
    Cheers Baz.

I have had it that my CDL light on dash turned off when I disengaged CDL, but the CDL did not actually disengage.

I drove about 100KM on sealed road, thinking all the time that my car feel tight and sluggish

When I tried to pull in to a car park it took a couple of goes, I then realised that my CDL was still on. I reversed out and it disengaged with a huge bang. The car jumped like it had been rear ended.

That was about a year ago and fortunately no damage seems to have been done. Now when I take it out of CDL I make double sure it is actually out, Reversing it after disengaging CDL seem to do the trick to ensure it is actaully disengaged

Yeah I do have the light on the dash but I have had a toggle switch fitted which turns this light off. In a nut shell with the AMV electronic CDL actuator, if the CDL is engaged and I stall the car, by turning the car back on it disengages the ABS and TC, so, by flicking the toggle switch when I stall, this turns out the CDL light on the dash, thus fooling the computer into thinking the CDL is off, so when I turn the car back on the TC and ABS are still engaged.....I then flick the toggle switch and the CDL light comes back on the dash. It's a bit fiddly but not as fiddly as trying to disengage the CDL in a tight spot when you have stalled and want TC to work for you!!!
I have the routine pretty much sorted now when off road but as I said, my son must have flicked the CDL switch and perhaps the toggle as well so nothing is lit up at all but the CDL is engaged.

I reckon it's one of these things that will only happen once, as for the whole of today I have jumped in my car and pressed the CDL off switch just in case .

Mick this shouldn't happen the TC, ABS, HDC should only be disabled when you turn the ignition off by the key, and not if you stall the car, mine works this way, i've stalled it a 100 times and it never disables the TC, ABS or HDC, you might have a fault there.

Oh, i have the AMV actuator in my Disco too.

Interesting......thinking back, after I stall, I probably turn the key completely off and then back on.....habbit more than anything. Next time I will try without switching off completely and see what happens.

I have this same thing in my 84 range rover auto, only seems to be when in low range and on full, or nearly full lock coming from the front of course, i mainly notice it when i come off the dirt and onto the driveway, sometimes i dont disengage it if i plan on going back down to the track, could this be becasue of the centre diff binding becouse it is on a hard surface, i cant remember if i had it in diff lock at the time, but i would have had it in not long before anyway, so maybe i should get into the habit of backing up a bit when disengaging the centre diff just to make sure it's free.

excuse my ignorance, i havnt had a 4by b4 and the ones im used to, have a std tranfer and free wheeling hubs etc as per early landcruisers.
