why not just use the sill tanks that are made for the defender (we are talking about the under seat ones? If so i have the part no if you want.

Hi all,
Just wondering if anyone has tried transplanting the sill tanks (fuel) off an ex-army series3 to a defender 2001? does it need major mods or is it just a waste of time and effort. Personally I'm not sure whats involved, so feel free to be specific if you do. I just thought it might be a cheapest option to storing more fuel.
cheers

Hi Jimmy,
There will be too much work involved.
The Series chassis have different outriggers onto which the fuel tank attaches. Also the under seat space on a 2001 will have a battery box on the LHS & Electronics on the RHS, and the series tank will need to take up this space.
I've been quoted around the $500-$600 mark for sill tanks (per side) to suit the Defender from Anthony Johnson (03 9729 9943) with a capacity of around 70 litres. Other quotes are around the $1,000 mark.
Long Ranger make a 156 litre replacement tank for the back, that option would give you the sill space for water tanks, which may be a better option.
I've found some caravan water tanks that would almost fit neatly under there (they were 3cm too wide!!!) and that was about 70 litres for $80. So if you can put the bigger tank at the back and keep an eye out for something that might fit under the sill, you may be able to get a cheap water tank.
They're my rambling thoughts on the matter, as I've considered the same for my Defender.

Thats kinda what I thought. Thansk for the tips, I think I will be goign to sturdy replacement tank option and then save the sills for water.

As a non Defender forumite just a thought from my sailing/boating time.
Could you use a fuel (or water) bladder in the sills? These are reasonably priced and designed to withstand being thrown around a bit with plenty of vibration. Might be the easiest way to utilise the space. You might need to set up a divider inside the compartment then you could ust drop them in.
whitworths is probably one of the cheapest and easiest places to source one with a few different sizes available. (The water and diesel are different bladders)
they are online aswell.
Only just found this post but will revive itOriginally Posted by cookiesa
Speaking about fuel bladders... i'm thinking abut one of the diesel ones for the fender under the back seats... but how do you get the fuel back into your tank... do you plumb them direct or use a pump or what?
Cheers in advance
