I would have thought if it was a liner even blind freddy would have picked up on that when the motor was apart.....but if it was / is a cap in a rocker that is much harder to detect and you have to realy be looking for it, its not hard to pull the rocker cover off a V8 and then pull the rocker arm out and have a very good look at the caps, Should only take an afternoon to have it off clean inspect and back on again

Yep, I really hope you're right, and that the liner damage would be obvious. I quizzed the mech who did the work and he did seem emphatic about the state of the liners, but so then was he about the rockers.Quote:

As for the previous post about how much trans fluid, it was nearly a full sump of the stuff circulating in there. I though that was too much but it doesn't seem to have done it any harm and the oil is still really clean on the dipstick, unusual (mind you I've changed the oil about 3 times in 3000km chasing this problem so it could be that too!)
for noisy lifters.....about 200 to 500 mls of auto oil in the sump oil and go for a drive before the oil change......
auto oil will clean out the gunk and allow the lifters to do their job......
if you are selling a car with noisy lifters......then leave the auto oil in there.....:wasntme:
I didn't, the mechanic did . Heaps, apparently - he drained the oil, refilled with trans fluid ran it till hot, drained then filled with HPR 30.Quote:

you add a little bit to old engine oil while warm and run the engine under no load at just over idle for about 10 minutes.... (100m (ish) per 1l engine oil) the addatives in the ATF will degunk the lifters and their galleries prior to servicing.
if the noise is till there its time to eyeball the rocker arms beaings and springs.
Give the valve stems a bit of a wiggle (use a very small plastick knockometer very gently) while the rocker gear is off.
If its like engine H6v003 (holden straight 6 you will have a little bit of damage to the arm and rod and its just those bits hammering
Yeah well, what can I do? I said add a litre, he heard fill it up with the stuff. So I'll leave that to the Gods to decide if I have a blown up engine. For that last 300km since then though, it's been working fine. Except for that rattly noise it's always had...Quote:

nope, he means a 12point bolt.. think 2 standard hex nuts off set half a face then magically merged together and your on the right track...
from memory there are some size/access issuses but almost any 3/8 / 1/4 inch socket set should get you out of trouble.
I have an 03 4lt Disco with what sounds like just one tappet ticking at arount 3 taps per second at idle. I have had the heads done and new lifters fitted but the sound still exists. Everything else is perfect now (after much work) on it except this annoying ticking sound which makes the thing sound more tired than it is (it only has 60k on it).
Any news of a fix would be great and I will have a look at the exhaust manifolds tonight.....
No news on mine; I took the rockers off and they all appeared okay, and I took them to a LR mechanic to look at to make sure. The only change is that it makes the tapping noise from start-up now, instead of when warmed up only. I don't think it's slipped liners as everyone who's had this on a 4.0-litre seems also to have had coolant loss and/or an overpressurised cooling system. Mine does not have these symptoms, idles smoothly, performs really well and still gets 13.5L/100km on a trip. There has been no change in 6000km of driving it, either. But it makes this damn tapping noise. The only possible solution I found was on rangerovers.net where a P38 4.0V8 owner had lifters replaced (with no change to noise) but then had pushrods and rocker assys changed too (which fixed the noise).
Have you listened underneath for the noise? It could also be a broken flexplate, something I am also going to investigate, as mine appears to be tapping from the rear main area (but also at around Cyl 2 up top, so go figure).
Another possible fix is synthetic oil, although I've tried Mobil 1 with no change.
