    Wrapping a wiring loom .

Hey guys, can anyone suggest what is the best tape to use when wrapping a wiring loom in the engine bay.

Idealy I want to protect the new loom from heat etc so it doesnt become brittle or being problematic in the future.

The tape that was used in the past was like thin insulation tape that had no adhesive backing. It worked well. I don't know where one would buy it.

After wrapping, you could consider using loom tube to provide a measure of protection from heat.

Hi Rob, the best tape to use is Nitto brand and Ron's suggestion of using loom tube ( also called slit tube ) is a good idea, but where are running the loom.

    Cheers

I was just looking through some pages and found Nitto self amalgamating tape. Is this what your refering to?

When I got the original loom for the 5L conversion done it was a mess, I was never really happy with it and its length was too bloody short with respect to where I could mount the ECU. Also the loom ran right over the dissy at the back of the motor which means its a major pain in the butt. So I have decided to re do it. This means all wiring forward of the firewall for the engine management including injectors etc.

Hi again Rob, any form of Nitto electrical tape will do the job and most electrical tape will work well but as the wiring is going to be run around the engine bay then split tube is a must.

Cheers and have fun do it.

What about spiral wrap? Use the black stuff as it it is UV resistant.

Hi Brian, spiral wrap is OK but is more intended to act to keep the wire loom together whereas split tube will also give some protection.

    Cheers.

Not if you ever want to get back into the loom. Self-amalgamating tape does just that. It effectively amalgamates into a sealed wrap. It is great stuff for wrapping antenna connectors exposed to the weather - it seals beautifully. I used it on antenna connections on a radio station that I used to maintain. We also used it when I worked for OTC on cable joins.

I'd be reluctant to use electrical tape with an adhesive backing because the stuff will, due to the heat, eventually let go and leave a sticky mess.

    From http://users.mrbean.net.au/~rover/planning%20wiring.htm
I have in the past used good quality adhesive PVC tape, applied with 50% overlap and with the ends of the tape wrapping secured with a short piece of large heatshrink. The glue on PVC tape eventually breaks down and it can unravel. The best stuff to use is proper Vinyl loom tape, a sort of stretchy, inch wide, non-adhesive tape which clings to itself but not to anything else. It is unaccountably hard to get hold of in my part of the world but I eventually sourced some from Eastwoods http://www.eastwoodco.com/ the well known US mail order company. Its great tape to use and gives a very professional appearance to wiring looms. A short piece of large heat shrink can be used to secure each end of the tape.

proper split tube is fire retardent/resistant, spiral wrap usually isnt.

proper split tube would be an absolute must imho, sealed with high quality tape.
