    CV's for maxi drive axles-help!!

I'm looking at putting an air locker in by 99 Defenders front diff along with Maxi Drive axles. Maxi drive engineering recomend that I replace the standard CV's with County CV's as they are tougher and will take the strain better. (quoted a part number for me too).

The local Landie guru where I live has tried a few different brands but tells me he still has trouble with them breaking. Before I go ahead and commit to it can I get the opinions of others who have done this and any recomendations they may have on brands of CV's to use.

    cheers

The Ashcroft ones are meant to be pretty good although expensive. The County ones still seem to break.

I fitted the maxi cv's to my '99 D2 along with the axles as I wanted to toughen everything up. Cost me a bit but it was recommended by a few other to do plus I run 32" muds and like to play a bit harder so I figured I would try and reduce the chance of breakages.

    Worth it IMHO, Mick

Dave from Ashcrofts will post them out. A very helpful fella and an enthusiast. BTW I don't run this CV, the guys that I 4WD with who are breaking County ones are changing over to these and they are meant to be the go.
    Cheers

    genuine county c.v's

a little note to take into account if you go the county c.v's.

i was looking at these for my defender with lockers about 6 months ago. to heat treat and have 'for life'

the genuine county c.v's have GKN stamped on them, after numerous phone calls to different suppliers i couldn't find ones with GKN stamped on them. i had a squillion people tell me there's were genuine but had no GKN stamp, and were alot cheaper then when i'd priced them 6 months earlier - about 300 bucks (and no they weren't aftermarket county c.v's - i've had them and didn't last long at all!)

no one could tell me if these 'other' 'genuine' c.v's were any different from the GKN ones. more phone calls later i found out that GKN don't make the c.v's anymore and another company does, but no one could tell me if they were constructed out of the same materials/principles that the GKN ones were.

so i opted for modded and heat treated hilux c.v's (supposedly stronger again) and cheaper. had the stars modded by jacmac - all done by haultech engineering.

i have mates with big rovers tyres, lockers, etc and have had years and years out of there GKN c.v's, this is why i wanted the same c.v. - not anything else.

this is not gospel but what after hours of phone calls i have been told. because i couldn't get a guarentee of the build quality i went a different route.

i am interested if anyone 'knows' any different to this

    cheers

A lot comes down to driving style though...

I run 35's hard offroad it and I'm still running factory CVs and front shafts.

Driving style has a large bearing on life.

However, Ashcrofts are on the top of the list should the factory ones go.

You would think Mal Story would have been making County CV's for years .
He can produce practically anything, and its all top shelf, yet refers LR drivers to elsewhere for CV's?
Can it be copyright? he makes axles and flanges, so maybe not.
As professor sum de miller said "WHY IS IT SO??"

Ashcroft Transmissions in the UK. Dave Ashcroft is very helpful. Website here http://www.ashcroft-transmissions.co.uk/index.html

The heavy duty cv's he sells are made from better materials (300M and 4340), the balls are a bit smaller in dia, which allows the star to be made larger/stronger.

AFAIK, these have 23 spline stars (same as the early county cv's) so you need custom inner axles to replace the weak ones used in later rovers.

I recently bought some 4.11 ring and pinions from him and they were delivered about a week later (maybe sooner).
