    Rear Diff

    G'day Guy's

Having a bad day, inadvertanly switched my rear air locker on on a hard surface, didn't realise and turned left heard a loud bang.
Cars seems ok and no unusual sound, Is it possible that I did some damage to my rear diff or drve line. What problems could i have reated out of this.

    Any adivce would be appreciated.

potential damages done by inadverntant locking

    from the outside in.

    hub spline failure,
    axle failure
    drive spline failure
spider/gear failure (depending on locker type)
Lock selector spline failure (depending on locker type)

the worst case scenario is that the locker has stuck on and you have had a total failure of one of the parts after it. Essentially this mean you are now in one wheel drive on the rear axle.

The best case scenario is that youve overstressed the locker and its popped out slipped round one spline position and slammed back home. Without knowing what locking mechanism youve got I dont want to guess what went wrong..

Id suggest chocking the front wheels, and check the working of the rear diff by lifting the rear wheels and playing with the parkbrake, diff lock and wheels to see if its all still working OK.

While its up drop the oil which will tell you if you have any damage, while the drain bung is out replace it with one with a magnet or fit a magnet to it. Metal bits are bad some fine suspended particals arent too much to panic about.

it is possible the noise you heard was the axle unwinding (whiplash) when the load came off it,if it still drives unlocked and there is no noise when cornering things should be o.k.,by all means check the oil and change but if it wasn't in for a long distance should be o.k. you may need a brighter light or fit a flashing led where it will get your attention or move the switches.

With that info Id be willing to back Stevo. the clunk/bang was one of 2 things.

    1. the noise was the diff lock engaging if the engaging splines were out of line or more likely

    2. the noise was probabley the driveline unwinding when you disengaged it.

unwinding transmissions can make a hell of a bang but its normally got a hollow ringing sound to it (give your drive shaft a light tap with a knockometer on the long hollow section for an approximation), dying driveline parts usually have a sickening cracking sound followed by a noise that sounds like walking on a bluemetal path with an assosicated loss of drive when you unlock all diffs.
