At a guess, yes and yes. Should always come on when the compressor is running and also may come on when the engine is hot.
Hi all , I recently brought a 98 Disco V8 and I see it has two cooling fans on the air con condenser but they dont seem to work. My question is, are they supposed to come on at the same time as the a/c or are they controlled by the ecu? Many thanks B
At a guess, yes and yes. Should always come on when the compressor is running and also may come on when the engine is hot.
The standard rover ones arn't servicable either. My local Rover workshop has sourced an Italian made A/C fan which can be stripped, cleaned and if nessesary replace the brushes.
Ditto what Bigjon says too.
Don't know how they are supposed to work but if I have the ignition on (engine not running) and the air con switch is on then the fans will run. Nothing to do with temps etc.
They come on with the aircon, at anytime when the system has enough turned on for the compressor to be turned on.
I rewired mine with a relay so I could turn em manually if needed to assist with cooling after an incident in Sydney saw me towing a horse float in 45 degree heat in peak hour traffic at idle speeds for about 3 hours... wound up crawling in low range to keep the engine speed up to get the airflow the first time round...

If you think you're in front on the deal, pay it forwards.
My Rodeo had an aftermarket aircon system (factory system doesn't use fans). The aircon fan was wired to come on with the aircon button. So I could use the fan for extra cooling capacity (as Blknight.aus has said but mine was for sand work) I wired a button on the dash to trigger the existing fan relay. However I put a diode in the existing aircon circuit so as not to back feed the aircon circuit.
Have you checked your fuses? I couldn't even tell you how many fans there are. I haven't payed any attention to them yet.
Thanks for all your replies, I have checked the fuses, so I guess its time to look at the relay, and hope its nothing worse. Thanks again B
All Discos and RRs with factory air cond are designed to have the twin fans come ON whenever A/C is on AND also from about late 80's models they will turn on automatically if coolant temp is too high....from early 90s they will continueto run OR come on when ignition is OFF if coolant temp is too high.Originally Posted by bellaposs
